Favorite golem?
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:47:47 am »
Just out of curiosity: what is your favorite Golem (and why)?

My favorite Golem is definitely the Hive Golem. Is an AI Eye bothering you? Just send in your Hive Golem, unload your 500 wasps and get out again. The wasps will do all the hard work for you. The wasps are also very useful for defending.

My second favorite Golem is probably the Regenerator Golem. It basically makes your fleet immortal.

Botnet. Reasons are obvious. :D

The Hive golem is great. I don't care for the Regenerator a ton now that Protector Starships are available. The two serve a similar function only the Protector doesn't run out of health and then need me to spend 10 minutes repairing it. And if you unlock more marks, it's in some ways even more effective than the Regenerator golem.

Some of the others (particularly the armored golem) are in need of a buff to make them live up to the name "superweapon".

black widow is my fav golem by far. It used to be the botnet, but then the widow got seriously buffed with paralyzing tractor beams. Botnet is amazing and can take care of most of your defense/offense, but it is utterly useless against core/homeworlds. That's where the widow comes in. Use widow to grab all the regular mk V ships and they will pose 0 threat to you. Use fleet to destroy guardians/core guard posts and done you are. When I played a 9/9 crosshatch game a while ago, I managed to get myself 3 black widow golems. Needless to say, the endgame was much easier than I expected it to be. Not to mention that the widows are a serious wave stopper/planet destroyer.

Black Widow golems.

Especially when they could steal everything on the other side of the wormhole and drag it back to your fleet.

A shame the AI adapted. Well, I had to adapt to damned tractor trains doing the same thing to me [Give me back my engi!], so I suppose that's fair.

Artillery.  Not much better for dealing with Starships, Fortresses, or other Golems.

Cursed. Not as powerful as, say, a Hive or Botnet golem, but it was my first golem and as such I have quite a bit of fondness for it. Plus, it's still very strong, even with its weaknesses which are pretty easily overcome.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Regenerator Golem. Nothing says a march to an AI Homeworld like 100+ Spire Frigates, a Regenerator Golem, and a few spare MKIII teleporting engineers. This was -before- the buffs granting self-regeneration, vampirism, doubled health, and halved 'build cost' (impacting repair).

After that comes the Cursed Golem, Black Widow Golem, and finally the Armored Golem.

Artillery, Botnet, and Hive golems are certainly useful (four-shot an eye anyone?), but not especially 'fun' for my style. There is just something particularily satisfying about Touhou-style bullet swarms, mass thievery, and just waltzing up to troublesome guardposts in heavily fortified AI Eye-guarded systems albeit after slipping past the fleetship frontlines. I haven't had the opportunity to try out armored since the new guard posts, though, except for one game where the initial guardian unlocks included implosion (implosion everywhere, implosion dire guardians... golems go defense). Plus that AI was a bouncer, so  I got extra Implosion Guardians.

Heh, nothing says "golems are balanced against eachother" like several different people claiming different favorite golems and that the other golems are "underpowered".  :)

Botnet for me, since it's so iconic.  Hives are also awesome - less a golem, more a C&C-style timered superweapon.  :)

Armored for me.

It's "shtick" is simple, very simple. It does decent range at an OK range but is quite durable. While its relative durability has slipped a bit over the versions, it still maintains pretty good relative durability, certainly enough so that it still lives up to its name.

Is it quite as abusable as some of the other types? No. But it is very simple to make effective use of.

Artillery Golem for anything dangerously unreclaimable.
Botnet Golem for everything else :)

Black Widow Golem and Armored Golem.
Widow is the best at killing Special Forces, Core Reserves, Waves and CPAs. Armored is the best at everything else.

Yeah the variety on the answers is really interesting, and honestly surprises me. It's great. :)

Picked Armored.

Mows down everything quickly, able to actually tank a beating and maybe live.
Life is short. Have fun.

There is no vote option for me.
I simply dislike golems from one very simple reason - their simulated cost by constant self damage.
This whole mechanic is silly for me - if I reconstruct it for hefty sum... I won't do Minmatar job on it. Since assumption is that we can reconstruct them we either do it properly (so it won't fall all over the places from running) or not do it all.

just keep the golems paused whenever you don't use them. A bit micro-managy maybe but it saves you a lot of money.
