Minor Question RE: Steam Activated Game
« on: January 23, 2010, 11:21:37 am »
I originally bought my copy of AI War on GamersGate - when I found out it could be activated on Steam I went ahead and activated it with my GG serial. From what I understand, the Show CD Key option in Steam should show the CD Key that I registered w/ Steam right? (since Steam has its own internal key). Well, It is showing one completely different from the GG key I entered. This sort of means that by registering the game w/ steam I basically got a 'free copy' (as in a unique serial number).

Is this by intention? I know that there are no license server checks for non-Steam versions so dup CD keys could probably be used (not that I would, love the game and dev studio too much for that) but it seems that Steam giving out unique CD keys is... off?

Just noticed it today because V22 Ospreys post made me double check that function to see if it had a Steam & my GG key listed.

That's interesting; this could be quite a problem Steam-side, if true...
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

It's not particularly intended, but I'm not terribly surprised.  Steam has its own way of handling things that I'm not particularly privy to.  The whole thing with the license keys is pretty much the honor system anyway, so I'm not overly worried about it.  If someone wants to pirate the game, there are far easier ways than this, is what I mean.  But thanks for letting me know!
