My gut instincts tells me it's certainly possible - although in such games you probably won't need all 5-cities. There are also situations where you stuff-up and can't place your 5th city.

You can certainly still win, but if you can't place the 5th city, you can't build the capital or progress the story any further, and if I'm playing FS, I'm generally trying to play out the story, so discovering I was blocked after being so many hours into it would be really very frustrating.

I will take you up on that challenge when I have finished my current game. Not going to play with random AI types though... I'm not THAT confident.
I was hoping someone would take the hint ;)  Which AIs would you pick?  Double-no-waves-type would be kind of defeating the point ;)

lol, I figured as much :P
Are shards immune to gravity effects? If yes, I would love to try a game against Gravity Driller and maybe Vanilla or something. Gonna be a long grind until I have a golem, but once I do...
Need to switch between AVWW and my current AIW game though, so it's gonna take a few days before I start this game (crosshatch of course, like you suggested :P).
Not to confident I will win though :D

Yes.

Grav Driller could be really frustrating at times, though with a more connected map like grid/crosshatch you'd have a higher chance of being able to path through planets controlled by the other AI.  But yea, GravDriller/Vanilla is certainly fair game :)
