Exo-Wave Spawns
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:38:33 pm »
Alright, quicky question.  Are Exo Waves considered full warp waves or reinforcement warp waves?  The reason I'm asking is I just had an exo hit me from behind where I spent 70+ AIP clearing out tons of warp gates.  I'm poking around for a warp guardian or something similar but no luck so far.
... and then we'll have cake.

I have seen something similar. I had that happen in my last game. To overcome it, I had to make periodic stops between every advancement to clear the place out.

Think I found it, I missed an AI Eye in the backfield.

It looks for "wave" warp gates, which are full or wave-only gates.  Reinforcement-only gates are not eligible.

If either AI is a Warp Jumper, this restriction doesn't apply.  Warp Jumpers are pretty insane.

I've noticed an easy to way to be sure you're safe against exo waves is to look at the information in the top left while the game is NOT paused. It tells you how many reinforcement gates and wave gates are left on the planet. For some reason this information is not shown if you are flipping through the AI planets while the game is paused. If it says the planet is down to reinforcement gates only, you should be safe against exo waves coming from there.

GREAT feature, by the way. I love being able to see that information at a glance up there instead of having to dig through the summary of each planet I'm checking.

Agreed Fiend, and excellent feature.  I just didn't have scouts everywhere, which limited that, and it was a lot of territory.  A blind moment but it confuzzled me when I'd though I was safe (I'd just went through and blown out ~14 warp gates, heh).

I noticed that the names of the planet in galaxy view are red if they are warp-capable, and orange if they are not. A warp-gate guardian spawned in one of these worlds and it turned back to red again while that guardian was alive -> that guardian was also fully capable of summoning an exo-wave at the back of my planets.

It might be handy to have this information on planet view as well.

The warp point names are similarly colored red or orange.

Also, on the galaxy map, doesn't a totally non-AI planet (that you haven't colonized) show as a subdued gray dot, but if it still has a warp gate it shows as a small-but-angry-looking red dot?

At least, that's how I tracked the process of the Imperial Spire minor faction fleet during testing.

Cool. Do the red/orange/grey dots and lines depend on whether or not your scouting is up to date, or do they update regardless?

I don't actually know, off hand :)  Generally things are based on how things are rather than the way they were last time you knew (since that involves storing more data) but I seem to recall it keeping memory of last-known-by-humans stuff and that might be one of them.

On a sidenote, Exo-waves are badass. They completely obliterated my home system in a 3 player multiplayer game last night. We had everything heavily defended, but they came out of nowhere and just ate straight through my stacked forcefields and popped the home station :(

Yeah, they are an awesome addition to the game. I recently finished a 24 hour long 7/7 game with core shield generators and the fallen spire campaign, which made for very brutal mid-late game exo waves due to the high number of planets I needed to take. I came very, VERY close to losing several times, and was only able to get my defenses up to acceptable levels by completely eliminating any AI presence within 4-5 jumps of my home system and focusing my defensive efforts along two major areas/routes to my home system. That way, whatever managed to get all the way through was usually whittled down enough for a mk III fortress and mk IV heavy beam cannon to finish off the remaining ships at my doorstep. It wasnt until the end game when I had a fully developed fleet of Spire ships that I was able to prevent them from getting close to my home system again. Exciting stuff!

Sounds like you met a Hunter/Killer.  H/Ks are vicious little beggars that will take nearly your entire fleet to stop.  Luckily they're so expensive they barely bring anyone along for the ride now ( a few hundred fleet ships).

I wish there were H/Ks :P UNfortunately, it was just a big pack of Mk IVs and a few Core Starships. Clearly, my defenses were not as omnipotent as I expected :P
