Engines broken on ships, not being repaired
« on: December 28, 2010, 03:47:50 am »
Is it just me or do I remember engineers in the past being able to repair engines on ships?

These days I see myself scrapping a lot of craft that can't move above speed 1 any more.

Especially annoying on spirecraft, but on them it might be intentional. On others it happens too though. Maybe spirecraft need more than 100 engine health to counter this easy-neutering of them?

Intentional that engines can't be repaired by engineers (now that I look at the name "engineer", it's actually hilarious).  That is a job for Mobile Repair Stations, which ironically can no longer repair while moving, in many cases meaning your stranded units are going to stay, well, stranded ;p

Oh, I must have missed that change in the game. Or was it even a change? I used to use Mobile Repair Stations all the time, nowadays I've been saving that knowledge... Fortresses can't repair engines either I presume?

Kind of 'unfair' to force me to spend 4k knowledge just to get some engines running... actually I'm not sure if it is, but still it is kind of an expensive counter. Especially since the only expensive engineless pieces of hardware (spire starships) can't even be repaired =)

Fortresses can repair engines as well, yes.

Personally I find it a little unfair to the player to be forced to unlock Mobile Repair Stations as well, but without any alternative ways to repair your fleet's engines, I don't see much of a choice.

Wait, why can't engineers repair engines again? I must have missed that.

Unless something changed in the most recent patch, this isn't a true statement. Engineers can repair engines just fine, and they should be able to.

What is a problem (bug) in the current beta is that engineers will not autonomously repair moving ships with engine damage. You'll need to instruct them to repair the ships in most cases; FRD won't pick them up. There is already a Mantis issue for that one.

Well I know what Issue I'm going to go vote up :P I've been having this problem too. It's gotten pretty annoying lately.

Huh, maybe it was fixed but last time I checked they couldn't.

For some reason, engineers won't repair ships as they move. Order your ships to a stationary position and your engineers will repair them IIRC. Engine damage is still a big problem on the nonrepairable shield bearers, once those engines are damaged there's nothing you can do to fix them
More music. More monsters. More to explore. More AI War.

You can also order your engineers to repair a moving ship with engine damage.  They just won't do it on their own.

And it's not just the spire shield bearers that get annoying with engine damage, all of the spirecraft have that problem.

That's a good point, I wonder if Spire craft should all be engine inf. It could fit within the lore in that since they are such an alien race, whatever systems the AI and humans have developed to damage engines might not work on whatever they use to move those massive things around.

A lot of the Starships and big ships are already Engine Inf, so it would make perfect sense.
