Question about defending after you have expanded quite a bit
« on: November 09, 2010, 08:06:32 pm »
I have exanded to a point where the Ai has to go through one system inorder to reach the rest of my planets... Is there a way to destroy/reclaim, old defenses so I can focus my defenses elsewhere?
Like getting rid of turrets on outer planets?

It's often handy to keep at least some defenses in 'safe' systems.  The AI will try to weasel around your defenses, and Counterattack guard posts can warp in anywhere in your territory.

Yes! heed this man's words. I used to do this all time, but after being killed one too many times when the ai manages to get past my border worlds, I tend to leave turret defences in place and just unlock new ones if I run out. Nothing wrong with deleting old turrets of course, but just be aware it can be a little risky - at the very least i'd always leave the turrets on the wormholes and command centre on your home-world.

I only have turrets on border worlds and bottlenecks usually.

I use my fleets to keep my entrenched worlds safe.

Unless you need to free up the units to be built elsewhere, don't remove your old defences. It's a waste of resources & as others have stated if the AI gets past your border world(s) your old defences can at least help slow the advance to your homeworld while you scramble your fleets to intercept. Do not rely on a single point of ingress to hold back a CPA (unless you defend the crap out of it with hundreds if not thousands of turrets, tachyon emitters & an FRD fleet).

I find leaving some defence at my home planet, is a good thing :)

Otherwise I try and capture planets and set up for choke points, and consolodate my defence there.

If thats not possible you might end up having to spend a few tech point for turrets and defending several entrances into your core systems.

It's a good idea to leave some defences / low mark ships near the core planet.  Otherwise, it's generally a good idea to dismantle the rest of your redundant defences.

When the Trader swings by important choke-point planets, buy a black hole machine.  That's generally enough to delay unexpected AI ships for you to scramble an emergency response fleet.
