Starting things Discussion
« on: June 17, 2010, 05:33:41 pm »
Okay, my idea is to review and refashion the things we start with when we begin a game, introducing faster or different gameplay, and feel free to comment.

CURRENTLY
Whenever we start a new game, we start with several must have things that help us begin our conquest, from "must needs" (command station) to "great to have"(space dock, harvesters). Theoretically, we can start out with only 1 command station, with no resource harvesters, using the command station's harvesters, to build more resource harvesters, perhaps 1 engineer, and then you get "starcraft 2" ;D(btw wasting 20 minutes of your game)

Fortunately, we already get all the resource harvesters built in, 1 space dock, 1 force field, 2 mk2 engineers, and that's basically it.

What I propose
I said this before and people said it would be great for a fast pace style game, I was proposing that you started out with altered stats of regular things like space dock that would build faster and such. Well, that idea is pretty far away so another idea I said was this, making you start with more things.

Military
This will definitely alter the gameplay, you can really rush at the start of the game or just easier defense right? wrong. I'm not saying that you start with 1 spire, 2 zeniths, 200 fighters, 50 turrets at every wormhole at the start of the game, but perhaps maybe 1 light starship, 10 of each fighter bomber and frigate, corresponding value for your bonus ships, for something of basic defense, perhaps a tractor beam and 2 basic turrets for each wormhole, whether these defaultly built ships are different from ships you can built, this will make your job of defending while at start somewhat easier (whether it is much too easy , we can discuss that.) AFTER ALL, you don't want to be starting the game over when you die at the start of the game, whether you suck at the beginning or not, making it easier will make it newbie friendly and will make you satisfied even you lose midgame, cause you had a great experience while it lasted. (getting spawn killed is not fun, but of course, if you want to say, making the hardest part of the game (beginning) too easy will defeat the point of making it so hard. but this is just an option, somewhat between hardcore and casual. anyways, you still get to do the cool stuff midgame)

Economy
Harvesters already built, what else can we have for default?
Much more, for example a default starship constructor or a default mk3 engineers? or even a special ship or turret you can only own on your home command station, maybe a default starship constructor but something default for economy would be awesome (default transport anyone?)

I get that doing that would let you spend less resource but we can balance that easily, and I also want to say that the default unlock things can change a lot, 10,000 seems a lot (too much)  since the balance, but anyways, it's just for discussing and if this has been discussed in the past, i'm sorry.

You can be on an enemy's planet within 3-4 minutes already, there's no need for early military to be pre-built.  You already get mark II engineers, and not everyone even uses starships.  I'm not seeing anything in that list that looks like something I want to change.

If nothing else, it would be nice to start with a few extra things, just to feel that you haven't been totally pushed to the edge of existence...

imagine a "hunted to extinction" theme where you own 50 fighters,,,, with 1 % health.

But... we have.
I mean more ;) Like a small force as stated above, like it's been pulled out of reserve storage or stolen from the AI or something.

I always pictured the lore to be that the AI took over space and that humans are safely trapped on their planets.

I picture the game beginning when one planet figures out how to capture the AI command station in orbit.

Love the article in your sig RCIX.  :)  Paul Graham is such an inspiration.

how about you are an engineer with blueprints, but no ships, so you have to build minions by yourself.

that's awesome, you reclaim all the ships, including a command station, though this parasite should be a leech

story: the last commander standing is a commander of a leech starship for spec ops which has the ability to provide supply and capture anything it wants.

the hell with command stations. THOU SHALL HAVE NO ECONOMY. Think bigger - you may not capture anything that normal rules say you cant. (and no building command stations. Hah)

Of course, that makes items like ARS or mk4 factories impossible to aquire. Although it would be nice if you could pick up viral shredders or get the dyson to help you.

mobile command station, resource parasiting the planets you go through, eventually moves to core command station where you don't win, you lose
