Does the Crafty Spire AI use Spire Ion craft?

I'm not really sure. I don't think they did. But now that they are useful in fleet battles the AI type should start throwing them in to cause more havoc.

Spireling doesn't use any of the asteroid-built spirecraft, I thought, just gets all the LotS bonus types, iirc.  I could be wrong, though.

I think you mean Spireling? A spiraling AI would be one that goes around and around and around and then presumably falls over and gets sick. Not much of a challenge to fight.

Most of them would either be really similar to a golemite AI for the couple combat ones, or REALLY annoying - I don't want to think about what the AI could do with penetrators if you don't have cloaker detection at every hostile wormhole.

I thought penetrators are immune to cloaker detection, actually.  Only way to see it is wait until it fires.
