But I'm not aware of any special press list with Steam, most reviewers need a copy directly from the developer/publisher, or buy it themselves, depending.

I'm fairly certain that Steam does give out press accounts to certain people and websites.  I've seen mention of such on the Rock Paper Shotgun website:

Quote
More importantly (and I realise that having a Steam press account that grants me everything on it for free does rob me of a certain chunk of objectivity here, but hey – it’s £30 for every id game ever. I’d happily pay that myself.), it’s an utter delight to have what’s in many ways the entire history of FPS laid out before me in one place.

Ah, very interesting tidbit!  Thanks for that.  I don't know that that is the case here, but it is good to know.

wow 30 $ for all the games in steam

You will need :

time to review games professionally

hd camera to make professional gaming vids

xbox 360 and all accesories

ps3 and all accesories

a friend or 3 friends (to play 4 player squad based games l4d2, bfbc2)

a pretty good gaming computer

but i'll say it's worth it

o yeah, some few tb's of hard drive space for both games and videos

how do you figure?

only noobs use a camera to record something on a computer or console - real people will use a program to directly capture the images as they come from your video card.

On a console you can do this through the video out cable, but really. You make no sense.

I would say its more to do with having a reputable game review company back you than the 30 dollars and such.

The $30 from the quote above refers to the price of an "id pack" for the id software games.  It has nothing to do with the reviewer pass.  I imagine that that is free.  However, I also imagine that you have to have a site that is very well-known before you get one.  I can think of a number of reviewers that I enjoy and follow, and that have quite large followings overall, that still don't have this.

Correct.  I omitted a substantial portion of the article I pulled the quote from, which was discussing the release of the id Complete Pack on Steam several years ago.

those are called commentaries, real people use video cameras to FILM THEMSELVES (with a tv and pc in the backround of course)

btw you might as well be as rich already to be editor in chief of some big gaming website like ign or gamespot

*shrug* i can grant you that you probably know more about video commentaries than I do, however I generally think anyone who uses a video camera to record playing a game is rather daft. If you want to add audio of your own, there are microphones for that, but I mean really, you cant exactly play a game and record yourself talking abuot it at the same time. I might give you recording yourself commenting while showing footage in the background, but honestly playing while recording is silly.

Also, I prefer my game reviews written..

Not to be contrarian (I also prefer written reviews except when it comes to the Escapist), but it's definitely possible to play and talk at the same time if you know the game really well and have planned out what you want to cover.  That's how most of my training videos were done.  Not all of them, but certainly the earlier ones in particular.  But then I sort of freaked myself out and started over-planning, and that was sort of the end of that.  :P

I'm not seeing Tidalis in my games list, but I've noticed ever since their big sale a few weeks back I'll have random games in my profile's game list that I've never paid for/played/even downloaded. They're not in my library. Probly just a bug.

Well, that would be reassuring if it's a wider-spread thing, to some extent.  Good to know, thanks!

Some games are given for free to all users, such as Moonbase Alpha (NASA's lunar repair sim) and Sam & Max Episode 104.  They show up in your games list regardless of whether you even know they exist or not, but you only add them to your in-Steam library by finding their store page and installing them from there.

well, commentaries are good enough but life style or complicated techniques need real life demonstrating

take machinima for example, full of mw2 commentaries, people would rather see like special motions on the controller than that, which is btw a gaming video.

also talking about games is also very good, few seconds showing the person real time talk, and another few seconds watching gameplay footage

personally i've been slightly reviled by the recent trend towards devs appearing on camera to talk about their games... i mean sure, they want to show off their favourite geeky t-shirt of the week but the amount of time and money they are wasting turning a small article into a full blown production; its just stupid.

JUST SAY NO TO DEVS IN MAKEUP

hahaha

really all chris needs to do is get a decent mic  ;)

Heh, the mike I used for the latest videos was a lot better, it's the walker ones that were much lower quality. Our Russian publisher had me do some videos to give them for promotion, and that was painful to do -- took like 2 hours for 50 seconds of video, I've never before forgotten so many lines I wrote. ;)
