Difficulty Level
« on: January 28, 2010, 04:14:26 pm »
I was curious what levels people preferred to play at. I've found level 7 boring enough that I tend to play at level 8.3 and higher. I find level 10 is too much of a grind, but level 9 is adequate for a somewhat challenging game.

It also depends greatly on the AI personalities--harder AI types such as technologists will always be more difficult than the easy T1 sets.

I am usually too lazy to, as you say, grind through the game on the higher difficulties--especially with players who aren't on regularly (timely issue).
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.

one ai on 6, the other at 7. depending on which friends i play with, we might pick less than 6 on a small amount of planets and sorta rush for points or somethin silly.

I voted 7.
I played one game at 5, the first one after I finished the tutorial, but I didn't feel very committed to it and gave up.
Every game since then I have played on 7. I have not completed a game yet, I have lost a few and in one of my solo games  I am 11 hours into it with 7 systems under my belt. It seems to be going well.
There is also a co-op game with a friend that is going well, that is on level 7.

I have experienced such a variety of challenges at level 7 that I have no urge to 'upgrade', but then I am pretty new to this game.

I have only played two games so far, first with 2+3 but that was too boring so now I am trying 5+6 and is 10 hours into it.

My first ever real win was in 5-6 difficulty and took me 36 hours by the in-game clock, but in reality it was mostly in simulation speed +1.

My last win took me over 6 hours with 2 other people and was on 7.3 and 7.6, I think. I much prefer over 7 difficulties.

Me, I tend to play 7/7 random all non-tech. I've yet to win a game, but I'm having a blast getting trounced left and right, and it's a definite learning experience. :)

On the subject of turning it up to eleven..

I play on 7 only, which seems like a reasonable level for those familiar with the genre.  I'm curious, does increasing the difficulty actually make the AI itself harder, or does it just give them more ships/reinforcements?
