You know how the bad luck rolls with those mk IV's...and the first wave still has the small wave rule.
What small wave rule?

Lots of good ideas here.  And it would be just randomly game breaking to drop a +80 effective AIP for waves next to a human homeworld.  In much the same way that dropping a raid engine there would kinda be mapgen saying "gg".  So a wave-size-increaser would get similar seeding logic (3 or 4 hops out, I forget how much), and probably still be optional, yea.

As far as making other AI structures redundant like armor boosting... there should be enough variety that it doesn't happen very often, but if it happens it's not a big deal: redundant != useless; you might raid an armor booster more or less at-will, but you'd probably think twice about spending 20 AIP to take an armor-boosting-command-station down.

About the armor boosting and other such "buffing" stations making things redundant, don't "buffs" add together if more than one is being applied to the same ship?

The +AIP station could also be x2 AIP up to +80.  So early game you'd get a smaller AIP increase but once you hit 80 AIP it would be at "full" strength.

I would love to see a huge variety of enemy command stations, each with their own unique abilities. keeps the challenge and variety up. I wouldn't mind seeing a warp gate command station, even with the 80+ effective AIP for those particular waves. But it would have to be rare (2-3 of them in a 40 planet galaxy) and they may not be allowed to be next to your homeworld(s). I wouldn't mind 2 hops away though. It would certainly give you something to be scared off but also something that's still possible to beat.
