Different Resolutions: Fullscreen?
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:25:31 pm »
In AI War, if I set the resolution to something smaller than my desktop resolution, my resolution doesn't actually change, the AI War window just takes up less of my screen (it appears to follow a windowed mode).

I wish AI War would actually change my screen resolution to match my setting. Is this supposed to be supported? If not, can we add it?

Just noticed this now, but basically AI War is not a true fullscreen application, and because of it's inclusion of GDI+, it cannot be.  So when you change the "resolution" of the game, you're just changing the window size.

I do have good news, though: this is one of the many benefits of our upcoming switch to Unity 3D, that it will then be able to run in true fullscreen mode as well as windowed mode, and thus your resolution changes would work as expected.

I had always wondered about that but had seen another post by you on the subject talking about the limitations. I like the idea that the Unity engine will allow for windowed mode, makes my multi-task game playing (that I do off and on) easier.

I hope that it maybe allows for XFire to work properly again as well (something to do w/ the steam version I think, but the XFire IG overlay doesn't work for me any more - used to, but  quite a few updates back [when Steam was going through changes itself] it stopped). I use the XFire IG clock overlay to keep track of where the day is going :)

Bear in mind that windowed mode is fully supported now -- that's all it supports -- and that it's fullscreen mode which will be added.  Right now it's only the appearance of fullscreen.

I hope that it maybe allows for XFire to work properly again as well (something to do w/ the steam version I think, but the XFire IG overlay doesn't work for me any more - used to, but  quite a few updates back [when Steam was going through changes itself] it stopped). Yeah, that should work a lot more smoothly, I think.  Though in the case of XFire, actually the latest betas with the new lobby have a better chance of working for you.  If that doesn't work, then the unity versions should definitely do so, but you might be in luck already, potentially. :)

I actually kinda like AI war's "fullscreen"; the window doesn't minimize and make a big fuss if i go to do anything in another application, which i really like. :)

Yeah, as long as your desktop resolution isn't too huge for your monitor + eyesight, it is really good. Mostly the problem comes when people use really huge resolutions on midsize monitors and then make their fonts larger. That tends to make ai war unreadibly tiny. That's rare, but the added flexibility will be nice.

Hrm - X do you know if the latest beta builds fix an issue with FRAPS not recording "popped" UI GDI+ Elements? [Like the main menu, lobby [excluding map], in game menu, etc]? I want to do a video series on YouTube but it sorta messes things up when you can't see what I do to set up the game :/ (I can't believe I just noticed this problem, but prior videos have all been from while playing and not messing with menus).

Nope, that won't work until we get to Unity.  FRAPS records DirectX and OpenGL only, and the menus in AI War are presently GDI+ (the same technology used in your desktop, start menu, Microsoft Word, etc, rather than in games).

Ah well, figured I might as well ask :) - sorta had this feeling about the GDI+ elements but you never know until ya open your mouth and insert foot hehe.

Thanks much - will have to keep that video series on hold until Unity I guess.

No worries -- and I don't think there was any foot insertion, it was a very valid question!

A bit of thread necromancy, but this matched my search...

I got a new monitor at a higher resolution (old monitor was 1920x1200, new monitor is 2560x1440) and when I start AI war it's still rendering in the old resolution.  How can I fix this?

You should be able to choose a setting on the Interface tab to match your desired resolution.  Is that not working?

Yeah, I tend to do that myself -- it's something we should possibly move, but I'm worried that will cause even more confusion than leaving it.  Anyway, glad that did it!
