In the new game lobby you must have had heavy defense not selected in the ship option menu.
Edit: In your game under the galaxy stats tab see if it says under disabled ships types Heavy Defense if it does than you did not select it in the new game lobby when you set up your game. If you want to use force field then you need to start a new game and make sure you select it in the lobby any ships that are not disabled should be highlighted yellow.
