More on planetary supply
« on: January 18, 2010, 02:54:22 pm »
Hi there! I've been playing since 2.0 and almost every pre-release since then.

In my current game I tried to experiment with some new tactics and strategies (well, for me at least).

I'm playing on a vine-galaxy and after 5 planets I needed to bypass the next planet in a row of 6 more to come in order to get to other parts of the galaxy.
This one is extremely poor with just 1M/1C and no extras, so I just cleaned it, not wishing to build anything here.
Shortly after I rushed into the next world, with much more prospect of 3/4 and a broken cursed golem for free. After a couple of minutes the AI was no more and I flew in with my construction crew. The command station is placed, the metal/crystal-harvesters are showing as well but all of it is flashing in red, saying I don't have supply to this planet. Well, yes, I know that, since I skipped one planet.

But how, after 30h of playing on different settings did I never stumble across this situation? :-)

After reading all about on how to sneak through a couple of planets and construct an outpost or just skipping invaluable ones, I'm a bit perplexed that constructing a command station is not enough. Do I need to have a mobile builder in that system in order to complete my command station?

The same question applies to a situation we had in a multiplayer-game yesterday, where we wanted to use the aggressive forcefield method on clearing out heavily mined wormholes. This, however, was on a adjacent planet. But again, the forcefield was just flashing red.

What am I missing?

Does the planet in question have an AI co-processor on it? Those will interfere with supply until destroyed.

Was the planet destroyed in your attack?  In other words, did you nuke it or are you playing against a scorched-earth AI type?  I am guessing not, or you'd have probably run into this before.

Most likely, there is something on this planet that belongs to the AI and which is interfering with your supply.  Co-processors can do that, as can a couple of other AI ships.  Look for the tag Interferes With Enemy Supply on any of the AI ships there, and you'll find the thing you need to destroy in order to free up your supply, most likely.

Hope that helps!

I just checked, and of course there's a big Co-processor smiling at me... I hoped to leave it alone for a bit, good to know I can't now.

Regarding the forcefield, there must have been some sort of interfering thing on that planet, too, as forcefields are self-supplying as well? Or do they generally only work on adjacent planets?

Thanks for the quick answer  ;)

No problem!

As for the force fields, those also require supply.  So, that would follow all the normal rules for supply, you can't take them on longer-range raids without capturing a planet and building a command station to supply them.
