I'm too cool for steam. I bought AI wars though steam, just because I wanted to be able to chat with my friends, and you need to buy something there, and fully intended to install though Steam, but I got a ton of localization issues. (namely every single bit of text in the game was replaced with the dereferenced variable names) As a result, I redownloaded the stand-alone game, and inserted the steam activation code manually.

It sounds like Steam just didn't download all the files properly.  Happens sometimes -- rarely, but it happens.  Doing a verify on the cache fixes it every time.

Thanks, Although I still like playing it without having to get on steam first. XD

I think about half my play time is on Steam, since the game was out so long before the Steam release, and I played a lot in Linux too, which runs better by itself than through Steam (Something with AI War and the Steam overlay did weird things in Wine).
