Neinzul Enclave wanderers missed.
« on: September 13, 2011, 10:30:27 am »
I heard from someone that the friendly Neinzul enclaves got removed, I had noticed their absence awhile back and just shrugged shoulders thinking they were getting killed before getting to me. But to hear that they are gone completely made me sad. What exactly about the friendlies caused them to be deactivated? And if it wasn't so bad of a thing could they make a comeback?

It was a terrible thing: people wouldn't stop complaining about their AI.  People expected full human-level AI out of this minor little side thing Keith had added on a whim.  He kept adding and tweaking them, but the complaint volume never went down.  So the unit itself went away.  I think he was saying in another thread he had some plans for bringing them back someday in the future, though.

The AI on them was mostly effective at annoying players who were hoping for an effectual ally, and eventually the player complaining made them decide to go somewhere they were wanted ;)

We do have some ideas on how to make them more effective and less annoying, but we don't have time for that scale of change right now.

I just liked them because it was nice to see something not screaming in my general direction with injury and me as its top priorities. They didn't have to be effective.. Just nice seeing something not be a potential enemy.

Regrettably, it wasn't enough :)  But if you want to see some friendly minor faction stuff you could play to the end of the Fallen Spire campaign.  It takes a while, yes, but I think you'll enjoy it.

And there's always the dyson golem, too.  Or human resistance fighters.

That's true, at various past versions both have functioned as effective "defense contractors" such that the human players didn't have much to worry about defensively, though sometimes their cpu's didn't take well to this.

I use dyson and the resistance, both are nice. Haven't gotten to far in spire campaign. Most of the games are ongoing with players times not meshing well. :( About those enclaves, how much work would have to go to get the friendlies back in the current generation of ai war, even if they are "handicapped" as they were to some. Or are they a write off completely until enough time is available to make them "behave" as close as possible to many peoples like?

I really don't have any time to spend on them in the near future; the little bits I have here and there right now are better spent on things that are currently in the game but have problems (currently balancing various of the asteroid-built Spirecraft, for instance) :)

Fair enough. Just want them Neinzuls to know they are thought of fondly in some parts of this galaxy and would like to see them back in far future. But if the asteroid brethren are in dire need of help first I am sure the younglings understand. :)

What was it about them that people were complaining about so much anyway?  I miss them, too, and I never had a problem with them.  I never expected anything out of them other than that they wouldn't attack me.  Anything beyond that was a bonus.  Now that there are only evil, hate-filled Roaming Enclaves left, I just don't play with them enabled anymore, because there isn't that chance of an occasional friendly surprise, no matter how stupid it is, to soften the blow.

I also very much enjoyed them but I must confess I did complain at least once, when they were showing up and inviting all my supposed-to-be-FRD engineers over for a Hotel California style party... and then not building anything. Like a stationary Black Widow golem for engies.

I'm pretty sure that was a bug though.
