Demo - increase play time?

Myself and a friend bought the game last night and it's pretty cool. However it isn't easy to find a game online w/ other people...maybe a lobby or something can be added for 3.0?

The real reason for this post is that we are trying to get some friends to pick up the game but feel the demo doesn't do it justice. This is not a game where I can really show off the graphics or something, the real merit is the gameplay. However only playing for 1hr doesn't really demonstrate this.

Have you played the intermediate tutorial? It is a full campaign with no time limit. It gives you a good feel of the gameplay

This is in the readme:

Due to the extended length of each campaign (10-12 hours at best), and the need for high levels of cooperation, matching strangers with one another seems like a recipe for a lot of incomplete games.  AI War is meant to be enjoyed with friends; if you're wanting to get together a larger game, try posting on the "AI War Meeting Grounds" forum on the Arcen Games website.  All the participants will need to have compatible schedules in order to complete a campaign together, anyway; this isn't like a quick pickup game that would just last 15-60 minutes.

No matchmaking. KTHXBI!

I disagree. I think this game really shines when you are playing with a few other people...solo it's much less appealing.

This is definitely a game that many (myself included) find most fun in co-op.  But if you're looking to find out about what the game is like, etc, then the intermediate tutorial will give anyone a good idea if that's something they'd enjoy playing more of, in co-op or not.  I've had a few players telling me that I give too much away with the demo, and that people might not buy it if they get that feeling of satisfaction/completion from the demo (which I think is bogus), and I've had a few, like yourself, who have felt like it is on the shorter side of things.

Generally speaking most players seem to buy it, if they are going to, by the time they are finished with the intermediate tutorial or even before.  That's been working pretty well for 5 months now, and has been praised by a number of reviewers as being unusually meaty, so I think it's tuned about right.  I agree that you can't get a full feel for the co-op aspects in just an hour of the campaign, but that's not really the point -- you have plenty of time in that scenario to explore the co-op mechanics to see if they are to your liking (and you can start as many 1-hour campaigns as you want, for that matte, if you want to experiment with different starting scenarios), but the main selling point for a game is always going to be "is this fun to play?"

My suggestion is generally to just send your friends the link to the demo, and get them to go through the tutorials.  If they think it's cool, likely they'll be sold on it by the time the intermediate tutorial concludes, anyway.  Or at least they'll know whether or not this is the sort of thing they'd be likely to enjoy in co-op.  Hope that helps!

Very true, I wouldn't have bought it initially if the intermediate tutorial didn't take you through a full campaign of sorts. I saw where there was massive replay value and went for it. Actually that's all the game is, its essentially the same game mechanics over and over planet after planet campaign after campaign, but the wide variety of maps that can be generated, the number of ships, the unique traits of each AI, and the fact there are NO useless ships/units (I <3 Parasites ;D ), really adds up to a new yet familiar gaming experience each time. :)

Anyway as X said, have you friends play the tutorials, by the time they clear the intermediate tut they'll either want to buy it or not. More than likely they will want to though, then you'll be to blame for the sharp decline in their social lives ;) :P

I agree! I am sold, and I haven't even finished the intermediate tutorial. Though buying it is another issue... Wish I had the extra cash! But I'll be replaying the tutorial many times! :D
