So in that case.... What do wormhole guardposts "do" exactly? And why do they have to have a 20 damage weapon?
The weapon actually matters; whatever it's shooting can't be repaired until the whgp can be persuaded to stop shooting it.  And if that's a pile of forcefields, the whole pile can't regen or be repaired.

Well yeah, but it seems like it should be x20 or something so it's meaningful. 4s reload on 1 shot is little more than a bit of hull wreckage impacting my ship's hulls every so often =p

There's a second reason for the weapon. It serves as a sign for "sleeping" defenders to wake up, as one if their conditions to wake up is if the thing they are guarding fires on something.
