I've actually been doing pretty much nothing but fallen spire campaigns at 8/8 ais lately. I suppose its not even the whole '1 aip is precious' as much as 'this collection of metal wont even build a single ship'...

As Fallen Spire is the only thing I play, I can agree with this. When you're building ships with costs in the millions, each, you tend to not notice a rather paltry 600k. So far, of what has been suggested here, the best ideas I've read were Draco's scrap one, or that nodes fill a % of your max metal, rather than a flat amount. Given that 600k was 60% of the previous max metal storage, that % seems fair. Now, of the two ideas, the scrap one sounds best to me. Gives me a reason to keep them alive, or, if they are on a world that is going to be painful to take and/or I'm low on metal, I can raid for some quick cash.

Why not combine the 2 ideas? While alive it boots scrap gain, (Human & AI) when killed it give you metal equal to 30%-60% of your current max storage. This returns a bit of randomness to them. Or, go with a flat %, with no randomness, but when popped it gives the AI 1 level worth of reprisal. IE, if you currently didn't have any reprisal wave warning, it would go to 1. If you had a warning of 10, it would become 11. This gives a drawback to popping them, but doesn't cause an immediate response.

I think way back when people suggested having a dist node might increase metal cap, what are opinions on that?
Ideas? Suggestions? Concerns? Bugs to be squashed? Report them on the Mantis Bugtracker!

Given that command stations do that now, that is less important than it used to be.

This salvage thing seems kind of OP to me. I'm building Plasma Siege Starships and Bombers with 39 Engineers and my Metal income is +Thousands/Second.

I'm playing vs Raid Engine/One-Way Doormaster / Crafty Spire/Alarmist and it seems like Raid Engine should be renamed to Salvage Engine.

I have to say, there is an argument to be made for significantly upping AI salvage gain on diff 8/9/10. At that kind of level, the odd wave once in a while doesn't really affect you very much. Especially given how much metal the player gains. But if a proper fleet wipe were to cause reprisal level five or even six on diff 10...

Well, at least it has a chance of getting through the standard exo-class chokepoints.

While I have no problem with this idea, I want to append this one to it:

How about a global reduction of Scrap recovered by players on higher difficulties?

The problem with just upping salvage gain for the AI is that almost all waves of ships the AI sends on high difficulties is that they get manually reprocessed into more income by the player's defenses. Therefore, upping salvage gain for the AI also ups the salvage recovery for the player.
A programmer had a problem. She thought to herself, "I know, I'll solve it with threads!". has Now problems. two she.

being as theyre distribution "nodes" what if they could be hacked in some way, maybe to give you permanent resource generation?
