Function of the wormhole guard posts
« on: December 04, 2010, 02:25:27 pm »
I wanted to ask about the function of the wormhole guard posts. Do they affect reinforcement at the wormhole? If not, what is their purpose?

reinforcements only ever happen at guard posts.. so yes, they are the focal point for reinforcements at wormholes

Even with the guard post killed, the AI reinforces at wormholes though, right?

no - if there are no guard posts, the ai will not reinforce that area/wormhole

Oh, well...thats great! Gives an option for extra-special neutering that was not available when the wormholes got reinforcements themselves. I guess I just have not noticed the chance, since I rarely kill the posts.

Actually they (the WH guardposts) were always there and always were the source of "WH reinforcements". They used to be permacloaked.

see 3.718

Wormhole guard posts are no longer perma-cloaked, and now have a small, token attack like the passive guard posts. These can now be seen and attacked if you wish, although they have 400 million health, so in MOST cases that's a colossal waste of time. But in an event where you have a ton of firepower and the desire to clear a wormhole without clearing the planet, you can do so.
Having these visible also helps to reduce confusion about spawned guardians for things like turtles, where there are multiple wormhole guard posts instead of just one.

Thanks for that. I searched the release notes, but the older releases are on separate pages so I could not search for it with a find function.

they are also mildly annoyingly good at stopping things from being repaired...  ;)

Yes, pretty annoying when they stop a paralyzed spirecraft from being repaired because no matter what other ships you have, the wormhole guard posts will not change targets.
