Speaking as someone who's been getting beaten into submission by Cockroaches (damned guard posts) I'd really like to see a hacking option for the AI Homeworlds.

Of course, I'd also like to see AP missiles regain (gain?) some kind of usefulness, especially in a scenario like this where some kind of extra firepower should 'feel' necessary.

Thinking of "puzzle posts" --- how about simultaneous kill guard posts?  As in, you'd get a set of two or three, and in order to kill any of them all have to be below 10 % health.  That would force you to break up the fleet ball approach.  Of course, for that to work, they'd have to have some moderate but not overwhelming power that would make it a problem to have them around, as well as some decent health regen so you actually have to get ships firing on all of them at once.

Hmmm.

I'm not sure if I like that specific idea with the multiple posts related to each other as that lends itself to wierdness once the RNG gets ahold of it.

I do like the fact though that this suggesting is something different. The AI Homeworlds have enough firepower as it is, anything added should be something wierd, not just more health and more firepower.

how about simultaneous kill guard posts?
The RNG would brutalize you with those ;)  Sounds fun as part of an AI plot, though (along with some other brutal guard posts).

Instead of having lots of relatively weak core guard posts, why not have just 3-4 per homeworld? You could make them significantly more powerful without actually increasing the challenge of AI HWs and making the assault feel more like a boss battle with the boss going through 3-4 distinct and very interesting stages. You could then remove the boring regular shooting ones and keep (and add) the crazies. Cockroach Post, Zombie Post, Huge-Fast-AOE-Lightning Post, Sniper Post, Dock Post (spawning a Golem/Spiracraft/HK at 75/50/25 HP thresholds) all sound much better when theres only a few of them and you can really focus on them one by one.

Right now the assault on HW is rather crazy since you are in range of several Posts, Raids are coming in and the pressure from Mark V ships is on you. This leads to trying to Alpha Strike the HW and just hoping you have superior fire power instead of a more tactical approach that a few strong posts would force.
