Community Game of the Month I - February 2010
« on: February 04, 2010, 10:05:35 pm »

The GOTM is over! Here are reports from users who played:

Since this is the first GOTM there will be no special conditions. There will be no winning conditions either, as it seems like we'll get along well enough voting on the new gotm at the beginning of the month. Since there will be no winning conditions, a lot of rules can be relaxed. The idea is to have a good experience and then post your action report in the After Action Reports forum. I will link to your individual threads in this post so we can all see how we played out the scenario.

Since the point is to share our experiences, try to be detailed in your report. Take a few notes while you play; write down what your actions were, what you were thinking at the time, exciting bits. A well written report can be as exciting as actually playing the game!

Do not post any details about the game before the end of the month. These are extreme spoilers. Keep comments as vague as possible.

Keep in mind that I don't have any gauge of how good this scenario is for a GOTM. Criticism will be welcome at the end of the month so that we can choose better maps for March and beyond. Remember to have as much fun as possible and not to treat it as work.

Honor Rules:

No one can enforce these, but if you do not follow these rules please make a note of it in your reports. The point of these rules is to keep the experience as genuine as possible:

-No cheating (modifying the game file or something equally deceptive)
-No save scumming (mistakes are the fun of it all)
-Change the combat mode only once ever (This rule can be made more strict for future games, since there is no competition here, choose your most comfortable mode, but make a note of it in your report)
-Don't talk about the game while it is still active. Especially not on IRC or the forums.

Anything else goes.

About patches: Note the patch that you are using in the report. If you upgrade during the month, take a note of changes as well. Try at least be up to date on the official releases as of the date of the release date, to keep experiences as consistent as possible.

I probably missed other stuff. Oh well, there is room for improvement. Just take the save and have at it!

Scenario Description

Set on an 80-planet map, you face off against two level 7 AI's. The combat mode is fast and dangerous, but you are allowed to change it if you want. The AI's are a Tank and a Mad Bomber.

The topology of the map makes for a quicker game, because the planets are no more than 10 hops away at most. The start is somewhat resource poor.

Have fun!

Ok, i downloaded it and am firing it up. Why do we have to be vague exactly? it would seem that that's counter to posting details. Or are we holding back our AARs till the end of the month?

I say post whatever details you like.  If a player wants to spoil it for themselves that is there choice.

I think we should all post in the same thread to avoid generating, potentially, dozens of threads all about the same game.

Personally I plan to make notes about the events of the game and my thoughts at the end of every play session, and then post those.

When I said to be vague, I meant during the month. Discussion should go in this thread until March 1st, but vaguely. We will post our reports in our own AAR threads on March 1st, and you can be as detailed as you like. Screenshots are encouraged.

I lost in the 27th minute.  Not too good.

At the 1h mark I got an AI attack on my homeworld of 500 bombers and 2 bomber starships and instantly killed my command center.  The AI waves were all Schizo except this wave somehow!

It's a pretty rough scenario, resources are pretty scarce, a billion mk3/4 worlds and I don't like how many bomber starships the guy uses.  Still, it'll be interesting to see if I can complete it.

Edit: I'm not entirely sure what the point of not discussing it is if it's not a competition.  I mean, I'd rather talk about it while I playing it rather than retrospectively a few weeks later.

Edit2: The fact that FDR ships ignore bomber starships until everything else is dead really sucks for my command centers.

I also fell to a wave of bombers which I was unprepared for.  I underestimated their threat.

I'm sorry that I chose the AI's to be so aggressive. I hope that it doesn't keep you guys from trying the scenario again, but more cautiously. I'm looking forward to reading reports.

Nah, it's fine I think, just a bit suprised.  It wouldn't be as fun if it weren't a little challenging. :)

I guess there's no spoiler tags for this forum so I guess I can't really talk much about it... but I the tank AI homeworld is full of pain and suffering!

I seriously doubt that i'll finish the game in time, but i think you'll be in for a good read -- i've already got 3 very long paragraphs and i'm only about 2 hours or so in!

Bump. There's still a week left. That should be enough time to get something done if you haven't already! I hope everyone's had fun with this so far.

Hey! It's over! How did you guys enjoy it?

I'll post my game report up within the week. I have been utterly *swamped* with work and just need some time to sort things out.
