Community DLC Suggestion Poll Nominations: Week of 8/15/10
« on: August 17, 2010, 02:48:37 am »
A new week of community poll nominations is up!

Here are the simple rules for Nomination week:

- One nomination per user, per week!
- Include the URL to the nominated suggestion topic in your post.
- You can change your nomination later in the week if you like.
- You may re-nominate a suggestion from a previous poll*.

Please format your nomination like this:
(nomination name) - (nomination URL) (user name)

Nominations will be compiled into the next poll for the week of the 29th.
(if we get a flood of nominations, I may go ahead and set the next poll up for next week)

*If re-nominating a suggestion from a previous week, there are no restrictions on doing so, but you should keep the results in mind when making your selection.
Here is the link to the previous poll: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,6471.0.html
Here is a link to the ongoing poll results topic: http://arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,3651.0.html (currently out of date)

Important info: The nominations that receive high amounts of votes will receive higher consideration to be DLC in the near future. If a particular piece of content is likely to be out-of-scope for the near future, it will be kept on a list of content we would like to see in the next expansion (Q4 '10). Please note that we may not know whether or not a suggestion will need to be shelved until after the voting.  Also bear in mind that this is Chris/x4000's game and inclusion of any content is ultimately his decision!

Thanks for your participation!

Make maps easier to read (I've yet to use half the map types due to them looking like a mess)

I take it you haven't seen the draggable planets ability added a while back?

Hold X+right click on the galaxy screen, then select one of the personal galaxy views. IIRC, then shift + (one of the mouse buttons) on planets should drag them.

Well, if everyone's nominating themselves, who am I to be humble?  ;D

Well I did hear about that, but I'd like it to automatically clean up the map in the lobby, not have to customize it mid-game.

I can guarantee you that spending few minutes to reorganize map by yourself gives _much_ better than result of automated algorithms that would try to order it according to some rules. And with automated algorithm there would be complains then that for map X it placed that planet Y in bad place ;)

Still, it'd be nice to be able to hit the random-seed button and see, clearly, how the map is laid out without having to manually jigger it around, and to have any allies in the game see the same map that I do.

Use the new X map type, in the CoN expansion then. And trust me, there's no algorithm that can do a good job straightening out every single map there is, or even i bet a lot of them...

Yes, I went down the automatic-untangling road for a while before deciding I'd rather just implement draggable maps.  I really don't think we're going to do anything else on the untangling front; the new X and concentric map types are very clearly laid out for folks who want that, and the dragging feature is there for those who want it on other maps (interestingly, combined with not-showing-unexplored-planets, draggability makes even the weirdest spokes maps fairly readable, incrementally).

Edit: and your allies can see the same map you do by switching to your alternate view.

Personally I like tangled maps, thus I use 90% of the time the realistic map type :).

Semi-Automated Minefield Placement - http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,4606.0.html - Fleet

To the Semi-Automated Minefield Placement... hold shift, and alt or ctrl. What you may be looking for is whats already been programed into the game. Holding Shift and Alt after selecting anything lays ten of them, perhaps a bit awkwardly but you can keep placing and you can fill the holes as best you can. To be honest this fits the roll your trying to achieve.

The size of the mines have been increased, and they repeatedly hit whats on top of them after the ship that is hit passes the 1 sec immunity spec after being hit the first time and so on until the mines are out of Hp.

I am Strongly against auto even if its semi-auto. As it would perhaps place the mines where I wouldn't want them. Sometimes I'll place mines around a wormhole, some times along a designated path the AI follows, sometimes in a spot around my Settlements or CMD where I know i'll be getting attacked.

Plus it does not fit the roll that mine fields are designed specifically by people or the AI for certain situations. If its automated, that just becomes kinda pointless when you already have the Shift+Alt. I can place 100 mines down in little time with that. In about 4 seconds flat when I'm circling the mouse around a wormhole or sometimes sitting right on it.
