ARS and starships

Just a question, considering the possibilities for unique starship lines much in the same manner of fleet ships, is there likely to be a change toward new starship types being unlockable in the same way? (and, I suppose, turrets?)

I was also thinking about how that might be implemented; the best I came up with was that upon capturing the ARS, the screen dims (as with pause) and a dialog box opens in the middle of screen, in which the player is given the choice of
  • a fleet ship unlockable (as now)
  • a starship unlockable
  • a turret unlockable
  • X amount of knowlege
player choices are cool, right? and, bonus, 'starfleet' players could bulk out their starship caps instead of unlocking fleet types, and turtles could unlock turrets, and so on. The knowlege unlock provides an alternative for players who find the avaliabale unlocks strategically useless. I realise turrets dont appear to need 'discovery' as is, but thats a just incase element of the suggestion for the future.

this is obviously not a consideration right now, considering how few starship/turret types we have in comparison to fleet ship types and with the limited developer time AI war is receiving, but in the future, perhaps?

I like the concept, but in practice there are not enough starship types to make things interesting.  There are dozens of ships you might receive at random from a ARS, but a dozen, or so, turrets, and half as many starships.

I really don't see a reason to make a change like this, honestly -- not with ARSes, anyway.  As more starships and so forth get added to the game, I might make more capturables that could unlock special ones of them.  For turrets, that would make the most sense.  For starships, that's really already pretty much handled with the fabricators, I'd say, even though that is a bit of a different mechanic...

As things grow over time, I'll definitely be evaluating more unlockables, and having some sort of ARS-style unlockable turrets or starships is not a bad idea.  But, I think that ARSes themselves won't see much of a change, as that's a rather core mechanic and I think it would introduce a bad sort of complexity.  Sister types of capturables could work well, when there is more content of those types, though. :)

starships isn't the same as starships, but a ars and a starship ars sounds cool

does it replace the current ars, as in you have a random chance to get a turret or a ship, or is it alongside with the current ars, 2 ars on one planet, one gives you a bonus ship, another gives you a turret.

The idea is that it would be yet another capturable spread out across the galaxy. Capturing the planet (with its AIP cost and such) means you get a new starship type.

I'm always up for alternate methods of picking up ships.  A starship fabricator would be cool.  I'd like to see more done with the build points riot starship idea.  How about a starship fabricator that could build 3 mkis 2 mkIIs or 1 mkIII or something along those lines before detonating?  It'd be a neat cap perk without providing unlimited access to a starship type.
