Cleanup drones need a purpose
« on: December 08, 2010, 04:23:25 am »
At present I cannot see any use in building Cleanup drones.
Is there actually any use at present and if not should they be given one?

I'm sure they will get retasked or even removed if they have no role in the future but with the focus atm on getting lots into a polished state and the general game wrestled into a better overall balance don't expect anything soon.

But then again this is Arcen we are talking about so soon might actually mean tommorow.  :D

They remove exploded AI mines so they don't get rebuilt.

No, it works on mines at AI-planets

Aha thats sorted then. Out of interest do you use them much, or are they too weak to be used.

I use them, especially if I want to neuter a planet to make a safe passage world (nothing worse than a set of mines which destroy my ships' engines when I am trying to pass to some other world) or if I prepare an attack on a powerful tier3/tier4 world. In that case I usually use the combo of siege starships t1 to stir the hornets nest and when some enemies come near the wormhole, Martyrs to tractor beam enemy ships into the world next to the planet I am attacking (planet I am holding and have an army ready to pick them 100 at a time). If mines were present, my Martyrs would have no engines which would end in... well, an explosion.

Exploded AI mines on human planets are automatically scrapped and do not require cleanup.

Now, not really :)

I've been saying this for awhile. Personally I think retasking them (since they already exist in code) as one half of a military/econ engineer split (per http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=1367) would be a good idea.

Necromancy, go!

I was thinking of posting something about this but I found this old thread already mentioning it. Cleanup drones are still almost completely pointless. Their single function of removing mine remains from AI worlds is hardly enough to justify having them as a separate unit, is it? Why not roll that functionality into remains rebuilders or engineers instead? Or is there some other reason I'm not considering that makes it worthwhile to keep these guys around? I think the only one I built was in the tutorial, and I haven't had cause to ever touch them again.

Make them military units that deal tenfold damage to disabled enemies  ::)

Yeah, I remember on the first game I played, I built some Cleanup drones on all of my planets because I was afraid the AI ships I destroyed would leave behind remains but then I figured out that that didn't happen and that they were kinda useless.

Redefining the meaning of 'cleanup' entirely.  ;D
