Children of Neinzul Beta
« on: September 05, 2010, 12:31:03 pm »
Hi, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me,

I've got the trail version of the CoN beta installed but was thinking about purchasing the full thing.  However, as it's still in beta does that mean that I then have to purchase the full expansion again when its fully released or will the full release just upgrade the beta I already have installed?
Wait, did you just say "Thermonuclear galactic destruction is a bad idea."?

The beta is free but if you feel like buy CON now you can. If your using steam you will get a code that you can enter right away and your good to go.

The thing is I'm running it on steam and I have the beta installed but it's only a trial version.  I don't believe that you can buy CoN through steam yet so I presume I'd have to purchase a seperate license key for it.  I'm just not sure if I can buy a license key from somewhere without ordering or downloading another copy.  I just want to unlock the full version I already have installed.

The license for the beta is also the license for the full version.

Yeah, but I still don't have one.  It's still in trial mode.  I want to unlock the full thing without having download or order a new copy.

You can purchase a license key on the arcengames site and it will unlock the beta.  When it goes to full release, the same license key will unlock the release version.  You will probably be able to register the license key with steam and download through steam.  That's the way the base game and the first expansion worked.  The same key can be used to unlock the arcengames download and the steam version.  Hope that helps.

Just to clarify, CoN is not yet available on Steam; we have every intention of it being on steam for the official release but it's not likely to be on there during the beta period.

We will also ask Valve to enable the usual "retail activation" feature whereby you can register a key bought somewhere else (like our site) in steam to get access to the usual advantages of having gotten the game through steam.  We can't guaruntee that this will in fact happen (and it will likely take a couple weeks after release to be available in any event), but we don't have any reason to believe it won't work out :)

But yea, buying CoN means getting the full product, as well as the beta versions as they come out; the game doesn't really distinguish a lot between the beta and the official, actually :)

You don't even have to wait actually.

I run AI war through steam and I downloaded CoN from the arcen website, installed it over my steam copy, activated the CoN beta in steam with a key bought off the arcen website.

Just finished a 27 hour marathon game without issue.

The only tricky part is you do have to apply the inital CoN beta patch manually I believe, I don't think the in-game updater will update CoN content without the beta already installed.

If for some reason it doesn't work and you really want to try CoN, the key for AI war on steam also works for the stand-alone installed available from arcen's website, for both the base game and the Zenith expansion. I was at one point running two different version of AI war so I have tested that.

The trial version isn't nearly long enough to actually see the new features and how awesome it is. The first initial release of the game, they had a tutorial that was the right length of time to see the game. The new limit is just too short to see what this expansion is about. However, let me just say, you won't be disappointed. If you like the first game, and Zenith, you will like CoN.

I'm a bit confused by that statement; the initial limit for trial campaigns was 1 hour.  More recently it was changed to 3 hours.

Or are you referring to the intermediate tutorial? The tutorial definitely needs updating, and perhaps we could work in some CoN-specific tutorials and whatnot (Chris knows a whole lot more about making them than I do).

Definitely.  It does innovate a fair bit, but if someone hates the game this won't change that ;)  But if you like the base game, I can honestly say that there's waaaaay more than $4 worth of fun for you in CoN :)

I'm referring to the c.o.n. time limit. I believe it was two hours. It's one of the reasons I purchased it; I knew the time limit was too short for this kind of game. Someone else can correct me on the actual time.

Ah, yea; the time limit for trial mode is 3 hours, regardless of why it's trial mode (i.e. not having a base game trial key or not having a key for an enabled expansion); there was no change for CoN on that.

the trial is pretty generous compared to the demo releases of most mainstream games

I was merely saying that you cannot adequately see the content that you get considering that the first couple hours of the game are spent just getting a foothold, not being able to explore the different parts of this expansion. Just because you can compare it to other games, I don't think it's legitimate in this case because this kind of game is more like a fantasy space simulation than a typical rts. That being said, I already purchased it, so there's no cause to flag me down on this.
