Call for saves for 7.0/expansion trailer material
« on: May 22, 2013, 06:38:31 pm »
Hey everyone :)

Kevin-the-trailer-guy mentioned how some of the most interesting footage for AIW's last round of trailers came from player-submitted saves, and how he'd love to be able to that again (and moreso) this time around.

So if while playing you come across one of those "this is why I love AI War" moments, please post a save here and tell us where/how to find the particular awesomeness you had in mind.  You may find the keep-autosaves feature (and possibly a fairly frequent autosave interval) useful in this.

This seems to be the most popular trailer thus far among our core fans, btw: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gr_oSOSTfbA
And here's our most recent one: http://store.steampowered.com/video/40400/82166

Some things we'd particularly like to highlight:
- "Smart" play by the AI.
- Interesting emergent interactions.
- Awesome battles (that don't chug Kevin's machine while he tries to record them ;) )
- Anything else that you think really highlights the good stuff you can get from AIW that you can't get anywhere else.

Suggestions for text and cinematography, etc are all welcome.

Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks :)

If I play any games that won't melt his CPU, I'll post them up.  Large battles are always fun to watch :)  Purple smoke and ozone are not :)

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Haha, yea.  I believe he has a pretty capable rig for the recording, but a lot of that capacity's going to be going towards the actual, y'know, recording ;)  And the sort of slideshow your battles typically wind up looking like (at least, I assume they're low-framerate even on your beast) are fun when you know what's going on but probably wouldn't reflect well in a trailer.  Except for going next to the "can make your CPU melt!" selling point, of course.

I've had some fairly large battles that didn't slideshow.  And I've had those that were decided in the span of two frames (some 10 seconds apart).  :)

You either get a powerhouse computer and use it for Crysis 3, or you get a powerhouse computer and play 16 homeworld uberchokepoint games of AI War.

It's not just an FPS, it's a PC benchmark.

When you have played FPS in real life, games just don't compare?  And no, I've not shot at people with real rounds.

Ahh. Well, real life does have the best graphics and the fastest graphics cards. I'll give it that much. I don't actually play Crysis. I was making a joke related to it as a benchmark.

I could post my games but then the name of the expansion should be renamed to Vengeance of the Super Cat! AI=Sad Panda!

EDIT: ok ok I gave the AI a chance
I think this is a pretty cool looking fight. There's a wave coming to my home planet in a couple of seconds. I sent the "cavalry" to FRD to the home planet so they arrive a couple of seconds after the wave. You can stop the cavalry from assisting the home planet and just let the turrets and the space docks spamming Space Planes to do their thing to make the battle look more desperate. It looks sooo cool when the Tractor Turrets under the Force Fields grab the AI ships and then the other turrets blow them up and you see missiles and laser flying around and stuff! Sure there's lot of turrets and the turrets alone would probably stop the wave alone but.. you can scrap some of the damage dealing turrets to make the battle look more.. desperate.

Next AI Type: Super Cat ;)

"This AI Type just selects everything, v+right-clicks the human homeworld, *boom* problem solved."

Thanks for the save, will pass that on to Kevin :)

Don't tempt me to refine the Super Cat idea into an AI that would actually be beatable.

"Doesn't launch waves. When a CPA is declared, *all* ships under control of that AI will attack."

You put planets on alert at your own peril. ;)

hmmm...

How about this. It's a bit similar.

"Only planets that the player has a military presence on will be alerted. When a planet is alerted, all ships on that planet will immediately go FRD and attack the nearest player homeworld. Planets are not reinforced. Instead, each planet builds up a mini-CPA that will be composed of what would be reinforcements. All alerted planets will send their mini-CPAs at the same time, all at the same human homeworld. If one of this AI's core worlds is alerted, all planets of that AI become alerted and launch CPAs simultaneously. This AI still sends normal waves and gets extra static defenses.
