Bug or just really powerful
« on: December 08, 2010, 06:09:42 pm »
I was playing a multiplayer game for the first time and I discovered that each player can seperately get 3000 knowledge from each planet. So the planets provide 3000 K per player. I didn't expect that. It seemed unbalanced in some way. But I'm not that experienced so I don't know.

Is it supposed to be this way?

Thanks.

Intended, yes.

Each player has to unlock stuff separately, so the lack of this would be terribly punishing.

i read about this feature on a tip of the day thing at some point, so yes i do believe the devs know about this... haven't played a multi-player game though, so i don't know/can't comment on if it unbalances things

In general the benefits of having more players seem easily to outweigh the drawbacks (more resources, more Homeworlds, easier Energy and Knowledge), this is probably an effort to encourage team play (it is more fun after all) :P

This makes sense. It also makes thematic sense because the humans would share knowledge. Like all players get the new type from an ARS.

In general, the amount of developer trolling is making the community-progress level go up and we're considering launching a wave :P

This is mostly true, but the effort of coordinating all those players actually makes up for it in my experience.  If you have four players who are all really awesome and singularly coordinated, yes it's undoubtedly somewhat-to-significantly easier in multiplayer.  The reality is that teams have uneven members and in general players don't all do things together and at once, and so a lot of inefficiency creeps in.

Think how long it takes you to decide where to eat lunch, versus you and three coworkers.   That's basically what I'm talking about. ;)

For most players, who aren't fitting that uber-skills/uber-coordinated pattern, it should be about the same in multiplayer and solo.  If you fall into that first category, you'll want to turn up the difficulty slightly when you play multi.  And if you fall into that category, I salute you: I and my alpha testers, who've been playing this game weekly since 7 months before AI War even came out, don't fit that profile. ;)

Play difficulty 8+ with a non-defensive AI before you complain about it being too easy in multiplayer. :)

If you're even pretty well coordinated it will go faster, but not really be easier. You'll just lose or win faster.

This is like the solo multi-HW debate.

That's probably true but I've never had the opportunity to because my friends aren't up to that level. At difficulty 7.6 though, its definitely a lot easier with friends from my experience. If anybody here would like to tackle the 8+ difficulty challenge with me however, I'd be more than up to it  :P

;)  That one wasn't trolling, actually: if y'all really want us to make multiplayer a bit more dangerous to compensate for the energy/knowledge/homeworlds/etc stuff, we certainly can.  But I'm figuring that it's ok as-is :)

Exactly. Yes it's essentially free knowledge, but seeing as the AI gets more powerful in multiplayer simply because you have more players, it's very much intended. I can't imagine trying to play the AI scaled up for multiplayer without that extra K bonus.
