Broadcasting playing AI War
« on: December 07, 2010, 05:53:36 pm »
Since some people had asked me before "how do you DO it?" and me not really being able to explain what they're doing wrong (besides throwing math at their bad ship picks) and prompted much complaining in recent changes, I have been considering broadcasting some gameplay of AI War. Is there any interest in this? I can't really show the old ways of floor AIP + 30 planet deepstrike anymore with the core planet data center removal which pretty much causes it not to exist and mk wave size multiplier changes which removes the excessive benefit, but I can still show what I am doing now.

I don't really have a minimum amount of interest before I say yes, but I wanted to check before I hassled. If it is less than 8 people who want to stick around for almost the entire game, it can possibly be spectated directly in game though if everyone that wants to is in the US on good cable or better connections. I'm probably going to use some web broadcasting site like justin.tv unless someone knows a better one (I don't). It'll be live so people can ask why I am doing particular things as it goes along, or post here after watching previous plays if the service supports something like that. I would fraps it for lossless (or at least higher) quality, but I don't exactly have a place to host hours-long videos at higher quality.

I'll probably wait until at least 3/4 of the bonus ships are hit with the balance stick though before I do this if I do this though. I also may need a bit to rethink and restructure my earlygame strategy with the half-energy on mk 1 stuff and better bonus ships (and thus ARS). I'll need some time to recrunch and test things. :)

Settings considered as of now (kept basic to show core strategy):

1HW
120 planets (forced harder deepstriking)
Difficulty 8
Random non-technologist (reroll turtles and other no/tiny-wave AIs. I'll take mad bomber + backdoor hacker if it comes up and you'll see me make that the only warp link open ever)
Show random AI types
Core shields on
Normal ship cap (small if the autokiting feature is cool but takes up too much CPU. I doubt that though because I have a great machine)
Blitz speed
All planets revealed (scouting is usually pretty trivial and a boring busywork timesink except in a few special cases)

Other instant map reroll factors (that I can think of so far):
-AI gets autobombs at the start (it adds a lot to the difficulty, which is already pretty hard at 8 )
-AI gets SBs at the start (tentative, with the bomber change going in today it might be ok and I'll remove this. Still no strong turret counter though but they shoot weakly and are immune to tractors so probably won't protect as well on offense as defense)
-Counterpost on more than one ARS planet (and thus forcing two counterposts via shield)

Expansions Disabled:
Neinzul (the ships are generally too weak, and I'd rather the AI got more useful things with the bonus ships being buffed recently)
Spire (the new ships and things are wonkily balanced still, and the wave size minimums do funny things sometimes)

I keep weird hours, so I probably wouldn't be able to sit and watch an entire broadcast, but if there was some way to record it for later viewing, I would absolutely be interested in that.

Justin.tv, at least, records them for later viewing. I think it's only something like 640x480ish resolution for free though. Or that's all my connection's upstream supports. One of the two. It's not the glorious 1900x1200 I play in for sure.

As long as I can tell basically what's going on, that's fine with me.

Sounds like a great idea! Thanks for offering. I'd love to, but I really dont have the free time to watch, unless maybe you offer a cut down 10-20 minute video showing the key highlights. That said, when I saw this something came to mind. Gentlemen (and ladies), I have a dream. A dream that one day, I will play AI wars on a huge TV screen/projector, and will be free to act as much the overly dramatic fleet admiral as I please. A dream in which all AI wars players can make fools of themselves pretending to be fleet admirals commanding humanity's last hope in a desperate and daring counterattack. I have a dream, and it is AI Wars on the big screen!

It's AI War. The "highlights" are the result of strategy, not where you see it happening. :)

My schedule is rather packed, but if there were recordings I'd be very likely to watch to see what I need to nerf to see how you pull some of that crazy stuff ;)

Maybe I'll just fraps it and see what I can do about putting it up somewhere since that seems to be more the tone of this thread so far.

It's great of you to offer. For my part I honestly wouldn't want to see what you're doing, because I'd rather figure out my own tricks (that's mosto f the fun of this type of game, IMO), but it's still a great offer.

Incidentally Suzera, why difficulty 8? You strike me as one of the few folks in the community that would stand a good chance at legitimately challenging the AI at the higher difficulty settings without having to fall back on cheese.

Diff 8 is really pretty stiff as it is.  There was a fairly recent day where even difficulty 10 could be challenged successfully, but recent attempts to my knowledge returned a simply overwhelming horde of early-game waves.  Of course, we did make quite a few changes/fixes to waves recently so who knows where that lies.

7.6->8 is a really huge jump. Thanks to the step 8 multiplier, it's closeish to 60% more stuff. With no longer being able to floor AIP the whole game, bonus ships getting better so the AI waves aren't always so weak most games, and the mk1 wave size multiplier going from 1->1.5 it's pretty pressing even on 8. I could probably do up to 8.6 and still have a nearly guaranteed win assuming no mistakes, but beyond that the exponential growth on attack sizes is pretty crazy.

Right now I'm going to stick to 8 though with all the changes. I need to rework the early game a bit now since I may want to save more knowledge for ARS in the near future. Beyond even that, AI waves are probably going to become more lethal due to the AI not getting quite so many terrible ships to dilute its attack.

If I did double fortress barons or something I might be able to push it up to 9 or 9.3 though. If I did double turtles I might be able to do 10 without the core shields (counterwave would probably wreck EVERYTHING) assuming I can live through the very first wave of the game.

Oh believe me, I know Diff 8 is pretty stiff by any normal standard, it's just that Suzera's clearly got some very, very effective strategies for handling this game so I was somewhat surprised she wasn't playing at a difficulty where victory was less assured.

I'm not sure how assured it is anymore with the recent changes. I'm only guessing. :) 8 is a bit rowdy. The first game waves are 150-250 ships per AI, without mad bomber or sledge even. That's at 10 AIP.

The basic rules are pretty much:

1) Overwhelming firepower always

Tonight if I play any AIW I'm just going to be trying a couple things for early-game or giving the ship changes a quick runthrough post-patch. I'm not going to be doing this until more of the bonus ships get a balance pass. This is just an interest check until maybe the weekend at earliest.
