Bought a new rig to run AI wars ...
« on: November 06, 2009, 03:40:28 pm »
There, I said it !

My trusty old Athlon64 3400 + will soon be exchanged. I´ve bought a shiny new Athlon II x3 435 just to run AI War in multiplayer without those annoying hiccups. Just one small question, will all three cores be at work or does AI War only need two ?

This game is awesome. Kudos to Arcengames ...

Glad you're enjoying the game to that degree!

AI War has two main workhorse threads -- the main simulation, and then the AI thread (which runs on the game host only in multiplayer).  There are then around 16+ other, smaller, threads for things like network, sound effects, and music playback.  So if you have three cores, expect the sim thread to run on one, the AI thread to run on another, and then the third core to be mostly idle but handling other system stuff and those other smaller threads of the game.  If your game is not at full CPU utilization or even close on a single core (as often happens with the sim thread in smaller games or earlier in), then .NET may combine more of the execution onto a single core -- it will seamlessly spread out as it needs to, though, so no worries there.

Personally I'm running on a quad core, and I tend to see around 30% CPU utilization or something along those lines from the game.

Don't worry, you're not alone - I did the same.  My new machine arrived last night and AI war runs like a dream.  I hadn't realized that it was actually running below normal speed at all times on my old one.. things move so quickly now!  I think it's actually going to be much harder - having seven or eight seconds per game second gave me a lot of opportunity to think strategically...

     We should form a club!

The game really will run on 1.6Ghz dual core, honest -- but that can mean a lot of different things, as playrs have pointed out in other threads.  The new Atom processors, or the Core 2 Duo or AMD equivalents have the architecture that makes it run so much better than on older rigs.  I routinely use my old P4 2.4Ghz as a client in two-player multiplayer games, and that runs without a hitch, fairly unremarkable bus speeds and such.  Those clock speeds are so misleading, though -- so much of it has to do with bus speeds, RAM speeds, GPU quality and pipeline, etc.  Makes it very challenging to set system requirements that are meaningful.

All thankfully in due to the game's efficiency.
I have a dual core P4 2.8GHZ and it runs (mainly) smoothly, of which I am appreciative for.

Congratulations on your new purchase, Snowman!

Thank you,

I´ve waited four and a half year for this one.

One more question though : I intend to run AI War for the next weeks with the on board graphics ( ATI 4200 on AMD785G, MSI board ), till the new ATI5xxx are here in germany. Since AI War ist 2D, there should be no problems, right ?

AI War is technically a 3D game, DirectX9 based, and does benefit greatly from graphics acceleration.  However, I imagine that your graphics there will be plenty fine to tide you over.  I've had it running on older nVidia cards (the 6000 and 7000 lines) without any issues at all, so I imagine that a newer onboard ATI ought to do at least as well, though I am not familiar with that particular card specifically.

You'll be fine. I am using a Phenom x4 9600 and AMD760G with an ATi 3200 graphics core and it runs really well. You have nothing to worry about. :)

I'm running the game (Steam version) just fine with a few goodies turned off on a 1.6ghz Dual Core Laptop.  1.8 Gigs shared memory to boot, and output to an external 24" widescreen (laptop screen is disabled).  I'm happy to report, not even a hiccup in the game -- even with a the usual assortment of things running in the background like I'm, Skype, AV etc.

I'm looking forward to running it on a new beefy setup in a week or two.

But anyone nervous to take the plunge with an older box shouldn't really worry if they match or exceed my laptop specs.

AI War Fleet Command system requirements (According to Impulse)
  • 1.6 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM
  • 32 MB Graphics Card or Better (Must Support 1024x1024 Textures) at 1024x768 Resolution

Windows 7 system requirements (According to the box)
  • 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
