Blast from the past: free full version of AI War 0.65
« on: August 23, 2009, 10:10:12 pm »
I'm starting to feel like a very old timer having started at 1.004 or 5 (don't remember).

I understand the sentiment, so much has changed in that time!  But that got me back thinking to all the past alpha versions that came before, and how much the game has really changed over time.  So, I thought it would be fun to post a super, super, early version of the game -- don't get too excited, it really is an early prototype more than anything else.

Version 0.65 has a working lobby, some in-game working controls, (mostly) working networking, and a main menu.  The only way to kill the application at that stage was to Alt-F4 it, just to warn you.  And also, it was a TBS game, not an RTS game.  This version comes from November 19, 2008 -- eight days after I first started coding the game.  It was the 62nd version in SVN, I'm not sure where I got the 0.65 from.

Just goes to show you what months and months of hard work and constant refinement can do for you -- although I'm pretty proud of having it at this state after just a little more than a week.  My alpha group was playing it in place of other RTS games after around a month of development, possibly less than that actually.

Note:  this one also used Managed DirectX instead of SlimDX, and a different network library from what the current game uses.  So if something bombs out, don't complain -- fixed in one of the 740 SVN versions that have come since this version 62. ;)

Awesome, this is certainly worth a look. :)

Don't get too excited -- it's incredibly raw and unpolished, and about 80% of what is there eventually got thrown away, but I thought it was a cool look back into an early version.  I think it was Jonathan Blow who was posting early alpha versions of his game, and I thought that was really nifty for people who aren't game designers to be able to see.

Well, this looks like an amusing little diversion for my afternoon.  Much obliged.

Or rather, would have been an amusing little diversion if I didn't get a bunch of exceptions when trying to run it.  Oh well, no big deal.

I'm actually getting the same behavior as you, now that I try it. That's unfortunate. :( On the plus side, some of the images are a bit enlightening, I think.

If anyone can figure out the issue, please enlighten the rest of us. :)

I hope you don't get anyone else addicted to this version. I predict bugfix requests!

TBS?

Wow, I think I would actually prefer AI War as a TBS, though it's not particularly annoying as the RTS it is.

Thanks for the peek though.

Exception here as well.

...and you villains, you didn't include colony ships in this development version!?  How could you (even if there isn't too much of anything else)!
I'd take a sea worm any time over a hundred emotionless spinning carriers.
