Beam Turret Mechanic? (Simultaneous Shots)
« on: July 22, 2010, 01:36:51 am »
I'm using a bunch of Beam Turret Mk2s right now, and even though they have Simultaneous Shot x3, they will only ever target 1 unit.  Is this how the higher level beam turrets work as well?  If so, what was the point of making it Simultaneous Shot instead of just making it do 150,000 or more damage?  I mean, I'd hope the Mk4 turret would actually be able to shoot 40 different targets, otherwise it seems like kind of a waste as crowd control.

Note quite true; beam turrets fire in a fan pattern. For the Mark II, there are only three beams, so the fan is pretty narrow. However, nearer the edge of its range, it is visible. As the mark goes up, the fan gets wider; for the Mark IV, you can see it on max zoom.

Beam turrets use the simultaneous shot text because a player requested that they do so :)  In the initial implementation it didn't actually say anything about the multiple beams, iirc.

Anyway, they don't actually use the same NumberOfSecondaryShots logic as other stuff (like MLRS's or Light Starships) at all.  It's a totally different mechanic whereby the central beam runs along a line segment from the firing ship through the target ship out to the beam's maximum range, and the "simultaneous shot" beam end points are computed as points (roughly 40 world units apart which is somewhat smaller than the diameter of a fighter, iirc) along the perpendicular line centering on the central end point.

So the idea is that they work best against fairly tightly packed groups of ships, or large targets with lots of health (like transports).  If firing against a lone core bomber you'll be somewhat disappointed (though the bomber will still feel very unwelcome).  This potential inefficiency is part of what balances their rather ridiculous overall attack power.  A Mk IV does 40 * 50,000 = 2,000,000 damage per shot; if that were always applied in the traditional secondary-shot fashion it would almost certainly have to be nerfed.

Thanks for the replies!  That makes sense, and I went back to look at the firing patterns of my mark 2s and did notice the fan effect.  Gives me a better idea of how to place them for optimal effect (right now I have them in a cluster, and it'll probably be better to  build them in a ring around the wormhole to get maximum coverage).
