Astro Trains
« on: March 26, 2014, 04:48:35 pm »
Figured I should simply ask (google didn't give me much)
Is there a way for my turrets to attack Astro Trains as a 'lowest priority'?  I ask since sometimes harmless astro trains walk through a system of mine a bit too often and, with turret support (with no units preferably...), could really help deal with the thing.  Turrets don't seem to want to attack them even with no enemies nearby

You can manually order the turrets to fire.  Astro trains in general though are meant to cause the player's fixed defenses grief.

That's too bad, I rather not manage my turrets in that way :(

I'm on a high ship cap and there's a system that has -all- my turrets in it right now that a lot of astro trains pass through
Since Astro trains don't seem to heal/repair (or at least at a quick pace, could be wrong) it would help a lot (it's still nice they focus the parts of the train of interest)

The fact that astro-trains are not shot at by the turrets is one of the reasons I never played any proper game with them.

Most astrotrains require an inordinate amount of firepower to take them out.  They may as well be invulnerable.

Astrotrains come whenever they want, even during waves or exos.

A unit that is allowed to be attack normally becomes the preferred target of any units that are ordered to attack said unit when they are manually targeted.

Two modes exist for targets.  Manual only, and automatic.  Automatic targets in order: Prefered Specific, Prefered Group, most damaging shot.  There is no way to decouple this behavior for one unit without placing it in the manual only group.

If Astrotrains are placed in the Automatic targeting group, turrets will often fire on them automatically during other attacks, which could result in player wipes.  Since many astrotrains that can be damaged are somewhat harmless immediately, it was chosen to put them all into the manual targeting group to avoid this sort of issue.

This is a summary of why Astrotrains will not be fired upon automatically by turrets/fixed defenses as I understand it.  The alternative could be far worse in many situations.

A better alternative to getting the trains out of your territory is seek out and destroy train stations that would cause the trains to cross your territory.  The trains always travel between 2 stations in the closest route.  Using this knowledge, you can intelligently hunt down the stations responsible for causing train routing through your area.

Ultimately I think the stable state for astro trains would be actual invulnerability, and removing any trains that were just utterly incompatible with that (or separating them into some separate mechanic that worked ok with the idea of you eradicating them directly).

I liked the idea behind the latest Astro Train changes, but ultimately I don't like it because I can't set trains down on 2 and have them not completely dominate the game.

Because their trainstations are so far apart and because they CAN make deliveries to their starting point (if there's exactly one station) it produces an unwinnable scenario where a feature on "light mode" ends up being far more important than the actual game (because every time the deliveries reach 100%, the AI gets new toys on its homeworld...).

Yea, cargo trains are really OP and probably just need to go away :)  Or be a separate thing or whatever.

Awww, but really who doesn't like the odd artillery golem sitting in the threat fleet? Or the cargo built black-widow golem who decided to join the CPA. Or the superfort sitting next to a plasma eye, on the planet where tachyon astro trains seem to be pass through every 30 seconds.

Widow trains though ... screw widow trains.

Another thing is I have a planet that sits in the middle and it has an Armor Inhibitory

I dunno, even if I can only dent 400 million HP it'd still be nice to slowly wither trains down when there aren't 5000 ships attacking

IIRC, every time the AI decides to run a train mission, it spawns new trains if it doesn't have enough.  Killing the trains really only prevents the current mission, not future missions as a result.  I could be wrong about this though.

Well, we did ask that Astro Trains be made to matter more in the game...

Yes but:

Astro Trains should not be all-consuming at 1/10 to 3/10 (which they are, due to the low number of stations*)

*You may never see any trains, but they are still delivering cargo, which you have no hope of interrupting
