Turret defence.
« on: December 10, 2010, 11:14:49 am »
Hi there I am a newbie to this game and am wondering what peoples strategy is regarding turrets. I tend to neglect them as they cost quite a lot of resources that could be allocated elsewhere. After being overwhelmed by a 500 strong agression wave I am starting to think I may be going about this the wrong way.
What do you guys do in terms of defenses?

I always stick 5/10 tractor turrets by each hostile wormhole, as they're invaluable in slowing down waves and catching stragglers. Other than that, my choices tend to vary between what ships I'm facing... if the AI is using cloakers I'll whack down some tachyon turrets, while tractor-immune ships will make me place gravity turrets.

At the start of the game I'll also put 5/10 missile turrets down somewhere that covers my command station and as many hostile wormholes as possible. If my fleet isn't nearby then it can usually handle the odd ship that pops through without issue.

Any other turrets tend to be low priority for me, but if I have the resources spare I'll put down and even mix of the other turrets to help bolster defences against incoming waves. If there's only one enemy wormhole on the planet I'll cluster the turrets around it, otherwise I'll put them by the command station (taking care to keep them outside of forcefields).

I'm almost always using mixed set of turrets per wormhole I need to defend.

Few tractors per wormhole - Mk II ones also unlocked often to help.
At least it's 5 basic/mlrs/laser ones with set of 5 missile ones somewhere far (on low ship caps - it's 1/10th of cap then).
Quite often I will unlock beam turrets - they are quite useful to defend strategical locations.

When playing spire arc I was unlocking more of them also but I'm not sure it was helpful there.

In general turrets are a bit short lived - especially if you start to get large waves of mark II/III ships - even Mk III turrets are not so much help then. This adds kind of constant cost them them when they are rebuilt regularly.

1 or 2 tractor turrets per border WH with some missile turrets in the center of every planet and 5 snipers near each CC.

The solitary warp defense planet has EVERYTHING ELSE.

Turrets own for warp waves, just only unlock missile turrets (not mlrs), lightning turret mk 2, grav turret mk 1 (at least, to hold carriers down so you can explode them in tractor turret range to pop the ships into the tractor turrets) and regular turrets. Maybe a tractor upgrade if you need it on higher difficulties. Or beam cannons if you need some extra AE punch.

You HAVE to have only one warp defense planet though or else don't use turrets. If you have more than one, some of your turrets will ALWAYS be going useless every time, and overwhelming focused firepower wins AIW.

Hmm I usually unlock MLRS II turrets and they always kill the most ships but now I'm starting to think they they are just stealing final blows and may not be doing as much damage as I think they are.

When I get around 3 planets I decide which warp point I want to be my main defense point. I kill all other warp gates to my territory except for that one. I plant around 60% of my total turrets there. Well not all at once, I put down turrets slowly as wave numbers increase. There rest are sprinkled to other enemy warp points where waves do not go through and I save a good portion for defense against counterattacks for when my main force dies horribly.
