Golem supply issue.
« on: June 13, 2010, 11:47:50 pm »
Edit: K, this is not a bug, see my post at the end of the thread.

Alright. I suppose it's a sign of how much I'm enjoying AI War that I'm playing it this much, but it also means I'm finding issues, so here's my second one in two days.

This has to do with golems and supply.

I am running 3.170 at the moment and the patch notes for 3.168 say that golems no longer require supply. However it seems they kind of do still.

This is an AI system adjacent to one of mine that I just warped into. Note the Out of supply error. Also note that the tool-tip does not have the 'Requires Supply' that turrets do. The AI command station is still intact in this system aswell. The odd thing is that the golem was fine back in my system only one hop away. I did run the golem up to some AI ships in the system it is now in and the golem just sat there. No AI ships left in my own system to test if the golem works there.

Showing that the system is in supply and that it has an AI command post still. Note that my system of 142 ships which is providing supply is a jammer command station. No idea if that means anything, but something to note.

As I understand it, Golems should work as long as they are in a system, or within one hop of, a system with an AI Command Station, Warp Gate or Special Forces post, my supply shouldn't actually matter.

Attached save from when I took the screen shots.

Not really a huge deal, I was going to take the system anyway to capture an ARS, just delayed me by 10 mins to repair the golem that I can't use at the moment.

They have to be within one jump of an AI Warp Gate (or exo-galaxy wormhole) specifically if I recall the patch notes correctly.

Hmmm.

That would describe the behavior I'm seeing as the planet the golem is on has no warp gate, only a command station.

Bah, now that I've figured out the below, that's got to be it.

Looks like this isn't a bug after all.

I'm not sure how to indicate this in game however. At the very least, the message on the golem's tooltip about being out of supply is confusing.

I'll take another look this when I can this evening. (Posting at lunch from work at the moment.)

As for where I went wrong:
Code: [Select]
However, it is contradicted by the 3.168 patch notes from
here.
Golems do still require the proximity of AI warp gates, however, as that is
important for avoiding the most exploitable aspects of golems.
+ Any ship (including the AI exo-galaxy wormhole) with the "Warp Gate
(Wave) or Warp Gate (Full)" abilities will work just fine for this proximity requirement,
s a note
As command stations are Warp Gate (Reinforce).... oh.

Alright, it seems like golems are working as intended, it's a combination of two things that caused me to think there was a bug here.

First was the fact that I thought there were only two types of warp gates (the ability), the type command stations and special forces posts have, and the type warp gates (the structure) have. I saw the patch notes that two types of warp gates (the ability) would work to activate a golem, I assumed it meant the two I thought existed. The fact that there are three types of warp gates (the ability) therefore completely screwed me up.

The second is that when the golem is out of range of the AI warp gate network, it displays the message "No Supply, too distant from your planets or supply blocked." I'm assuming this is because there is no message yet to display on the tooltip that the golem is not in range of the AI warp gate and it was used as a placeholder, but it made me even more confused as to what was going on. This does still need to be resolved, but this is a tooltip issue, not a gameplay bug.

Go ahead and file this thread under file 'G'.

Ok, thanks for the report :)

Yea, there may be some improvements needed on the obvious-ity of the golem "supply" mechanics now, though this is generally the case with recent mechanic changes since they are often changed several times before reaching final form, etc.

I would recommend changing the logic from having to be near a warp gate to having to be near a warp gate or on a planet with an AI command station.
