Any hope for a Mac version?
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:36:24 am »
I received this excellent question via email today, and since I don't think it has been talked about here for a while, I thought I'd also post my response so that others who might be wondering can see:

Right now, there are a number of players who play AI War on the mac via Boot Camp or via (I believe) VMWare.  A native Mac version is unlikely because the game is written in C# .NET -- so it's not a supported language on the Mac, natively.  But as advances in Mono and WINE (which fuels Parallels Desktop) come along, I think a Mac version becomes increasingly likely.  When that will be, I don't know, but we'd love to see a Mac version when it becomes possible.  My father in law has been asking me this same question from the start. :)

Has anyone been able to run it successfully under Linux?  (WINE or VMWare?)

How is the speed under VMWare?

You should search the forums here about that, there is data.  From what I recall (and I could be way off, so double check), I believe that VMWare on the Mac runs the game just fine, at normal speed.

To my knowledge the game has never been successfully run on WINE on Linux, though there is a big thread in the tech support forums where some enterprising players did get it to install.  Mostly we're just waiting on WINE and Mono to add more support for .NET 3.5 and such.

On VMWare AI War works very good.
Wine don`t work because poor .NET 3.5 implementation.

If you can manage to get .Net working in Wine, then yes, it runs great. I've used PlayOnLinux several times to different levels of success. I guess it just depends on the machine you're running it on. But, as has been stated, due to the lack of video requirements, it runs fantastic in VMWare.

A good indication of whether you can port is to run MoMA (Mono Migration Analyzer) and see what it tells you. If it gives the all-ok, it's possible that you can port it...
