Am I stupid, or unlucky? (Can't find nebulas)
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:47:33 am »
I've been playing with champions for a while. One Home+Champion game started fresh and one MP game with my friend as Home+Champion and myself as Champion only. I have a problem. I haven't found a single "blue" wormhole in over 40 systems scouted. Is there a specific thing I have to do to make them appear, or are they simply supposed to show up on systems, because I cannot find any.

I would put my money on unluckly, or you are driving past them not knowing what they are.

I think my 121 map has about 15 or so. Turn on full galaxy reveal and look at the planets in the map. With the latest update the worlds that are backroads will be completely empty until you get there.

I find I have trouble finding them as the name of the system does not appear until you send a ship through.

The best way I've found is to tap the Ctrl key, that will make them 'flash' on top of other things and should catch your eye.

Also, I think there is an 'unexplored wormholes' on the galaxy map that will show them.

This is the best way when you are not enabling unexplored wormholes for everything.

I found this thread really useful; thanks guys! I'd found a couple of nebulae really close to my homeworld, done a ton of scouting, but just couldn't see any more. It seems that the blue wormholes for the nebulae get drawn under anything that might be sitting on top of them, but they don't have a label until you get the champion to go through them, so they're hard to see.

This tip really helps, but perhaps the nebulae wormholes should be made more obvious in some way. I had a few ideas:
1. Make the wormhole graphic bigger, or flashing on top of all other graphics, at least until it's been explored.
2. Show the nebulae on the galaxy map before it's been explored.
3. A note in the top-left saying that there's an unexplored nebula on this planet.

Any thoughts? Or is this obvious enough for most people already?

I think putting "nebula wormholes" on the scouting infocard thing is what should happen - If I'm not mistaken, exo-wormholes are there too.

For the moment, the first thing I tend to do in a game is open unexplored wormholes overlay and mark them all p9

Yeah, noticed that "Unexplored Wormholes" works just fine :P

I'm not trying to argue that the unexplored wormholes thing doesn't work well, just that it's not that obvious for anyone who might be new to the game, and they could end up missing or getting frustrated by a significant part of the new expansion. Though I suppose that a note could be added to the initial journal text regarding the champion about using the unexplored wormholes setting in the galaxy map.

To be fair, it did take me a few minutes to really figure it out myself, and I have been playing AI War for 2.5 years :P

At the same time, should the Galaxy Map really list unexplored wormholes on non-scouted planets? Perhaps they should, and if you do not want them to, you'll run with the "unexplored galaxy" thing.

As it stands now, I'm assuming the emissions from those wormholes are strong enough to be picked up from across the galaxy (star trek-style). Curious that the AI only takes a casual interest in the phenomena, guess the tachyon guardians are unable to get any sensible readings from them.

That aside, I think it would make more sense if one first had to scout the planet before having them show up on the galaxy map - ideally as a lane, with "unexplored systems" still showing which ones are actually un/explored. But I personally tend to invest in Scout Starships Mk4 quite early on, so I can't really say it affects me one way or the other.

It might make sense, but Scouting is already so important to the main game, that making someone playing a champion wait on scouts can defeat the purpose of champions filling in dead time with offroad quests.  I could easily end up with a game were I'm 5 hours in without having found a spot for my champion to go.  Knowing their locations in advance gives you more action early game for champions.

Ah, ofc, playing mostly SP, it didn't occur to me that MP games can have Champion-only players.

That...is a VERY good point. I didn't think of that. I was too busy neutering planets and scouting for my human compatriot in my game that I didn't actually think of the downtime that could happen.
