I could just make nebulas always visible (unless unexplored-galaxy is on, of course).  Ironically that would remove the ability to detect them via unexplored-wormholes but I could add a separate filter for that.  On some map types they're already pretty visible.

I don't think visibility is the problem, tbh. Just make it blindingly obvious to the new player that one can use the "unexplored wormholes" filter to find them. If nothing else, that might give them an epiphany that "AHA! There are galaxy filters!" too xD Win-win!

I think the whole unexplored wormholes on an unexplored planet thing is a bit of a sloppy way of doing things. Yeah, there's the unexplored nebula adjacent to the planet, but there are also potentially more unexplored wormholes if you haven't scouted over there yet. It doesn't make any sense, and I really don't think it should be set up like that.
I'd prefer it if, say, you could make nebula systems visible with some kind of effect (shadow vessel only, so maybe some darkness behind and a bit around the planet?) and put a separate filter in for nebula systems. I think that would be nicer than using a filter for something that's rather unintuitive for the filter's name.

Which is pretty much why I never considered using this particular filter for that.

Ah, the impression I got was "Well, just keep unexplored wormholes as the filter for it and slap it in the tutorial" which would just look like... not great design, at least to me.

I just got the game plus ALL the expansions a week or so ago and have so far have only fiddled with the basic game. From al the stuff on the forums I really wonder about bothering to activate some of the expansions....ever.

there will be a time when you'll crave more. That's what the expansions are for. ;) They all add something unique to the game, so don't skip them. ;)

Don't worry, the Hybrids don't really* eat players! :D

Uh, yeah, you might want to leave the Hybrids off until you feel really confident about the base game. They're all kinds of nasty.
