Planet With Two Special Forces Posts?
« on: June 17, 2013, 11:19:47 am »
I've never seen this before, so I thought I'd ask if it's normal.

It's normal for an SF captain.  It's rare-but-normal for others.

In terms of effects, I think what it does is allow that planet to contribute to the special forces at 2x the rate and 2x the relative chance that the planet will be chosen as a special forces "staging point"

Replace 2 with however many special forces posts there are in that system if there are more than 2.

It does have a very small benefit to the rate of SF growth, in that each time that planet is reinforced (i.e. unlikely if it's not on alert) the guards that would be assigned to that post are instead dumped into the SF.  But for the "main" component of SF generation it won't normally make any difference.  If the planet becomes non-AI, then both posts will contribute to the SF boost it gets for non-AI-planet SF posts (because it can't use them as rally points anymore).

It doesn't impact the chance of an AI planet being chosen as a staging point at all, though.

Oh, it chooses over per planet with at least one SF post instead of per SF guard post that is on AI planet (with "is it safe" filters and what)?

A small distinction, but a good one to know for cases like this. Thanks.

Actually I don't think the presence of an SF post matters for staging selection at all, just that it's the proper depth into AI territory.  If there is an SF post they'll stage on the post itself; otherwise they just kind of sit wherever.

This is only tangentially related to the topic at hand, but I started a new game with VotM, and I so far have come across two Mk4 planets belonging to the same AI, each with 4x Counter Attack Posts on them. Is this normal? If so, very scary. Looks like I won't ever be taking those planets, haha.

The AI in question was a dual AI, "Neinzul Viral Enthusiast/Neinzul Cluster-Bomber", difficulty 7 (which by the way, has not been a fun combination so far).

Yep, those are Subcommander planets; you only get relatively few per map but they get to be tricky with their selection and placement of command station and guard posts :)  There's something like 7 different subcommander types it can pick, both of those planets you mention would be the same type.

Haha, yea, that could get a bit annoying with neinzul spawns in your face every time you turn around :)
