Altplanetnames.txt doesn't work
« on: April 21, 2010, 08:31:40 pm »
I cannot for the life of me get altplanetnames.txt to work. I put it in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ai war fleet command, but it still doesn't work, even when I turn off the expansion pack. Where does it need to be for the Steam version?

Hmmm.  That should work, that would be the folder for it.  Is anyone else having trouble with this?  I think a lot of people use it, so it would have to be something odd with how your particular steam version is doing it or something.  There is an existing altplanetnames.txt file there already, is it perhaps that you are not properly overwriting that in windows?  It sometimes wants to make a (1) and (2) copy instead, which would leave the original with just Murdoch in there...

I'm using the Steam UI Beta. Does that change anything?

EDIT: Even with a fresh install, it still doesn't work. What is going on?!

I wouldn't think so, but it is odd.

See my last post. Even after a fresh install, it doesn't work.

If you run the game directly from that folder, does it work?  You might have to create a steam_appid.txt file with a single line reading "40400" (no quotes) in it for the game to open when directly clicked.  It might be that the newer versions of steam are doing something with how they are launching the game, or something.  It's certainly not been an issue in the past.

Huh. It works now. I don't know why.
The names in the lobby are different than they are in-game. Maybe that caused so0me of my confusion.

False alarm!

Oh!  Okay, that would do it.  Yeah, the lobby doesn't load those, because those are set based off of each client, not the host (whereas the ones in-game are set by the host).  So rather than having the planet names be confusingly different per-player in the lobby, we went with having it just be the base names there, and then taking on the official names on actual start of the game.  I had forgotten about that when you were asking your question, though -- glad you figured it out!
