For those (not) interested in the hypothetical "background" for this wallpaper (I made the wallpaper first BTW):
Basically, i imagine that this is the armor off of a Spire starship or something equally as expensive (this shot just so happens to be taken where the team color is) after entering battle and receiving a fair bit of damage. I also came up with a basic armor structure for such a ship:
- A layer of paint specially formulated to reflect 99.9999% of laser energy harmlessly away, pretty much standard issue on fleet and starships though turrets don't generally have it
- A layer of baked-on monofilament carbon nanotubes -- provides impact resistance from shells (there are more layers on other vessels liek the dreadnought and most fleet ships), what you see is the structure of the nanotubes starting to disintegrate and peel/crack
- A big thick slab of Unobtanium which provides resistance to energy weaponry and general strength
- Grounded electricity conducting coils embedded into the surface of said unobtanium to help dissipate electrical blasts; this is what produces the pattern of raised lines on the surface of the armor.
This sort of thing also happens to explain why
- fleet starships don't do well versus fighters
- raid starships are good vs. turrets
. Anyway, thought you might be interested in hearing some "lore" for a change rather than just non-stop "gears and levers" of gameplay.
