Resource nodes, while helpful, aren't that significant I've found.  300,000 resources hardly makes a dent in the cost of a refleet.  I generally burned through the full million reserve and two nodes and still bottomed out.

Could make resource nodes slowly scale up with time / AIP...

Mostly unrelated to all of the other discussions in here (I think the salvage mechanics sound fun, and I would love Econ commands to add more storage) but it seems the obvious solution to keep them relevant, and would give the standard tradeoff of some money now, or MORE money later :)

That's brilliant.

How many homeworlds and planets did you have? What was the difficulty level? Were you (re?)building golems and/or starships?

I typically play one homeworld.  I think that game was 6/6, might've been 7/7, don't recall offhand.  And while I did have golems, yes, I was not actively repairing them at the time.  Starships probably.

Do you buy the upgraded Metal and Crystal nodes and/or the upgraded command stations?

I tend towards node upgrades, don't recall what I did in that game, but yes, I did have economy upgrades.

Mark II Harvesters with Mark II Military Command Stations seem to be working well. Mark I MilitaryCS vs Mark II MilitaryCS is almost same as +2 Mark II Harvesters. I have Mark IV Fighters and Neinzul Tigers and Mark I Bombers and Missile Frigates and hundreds of thousands of resources most of the time. Sure Fighters are Tigers are cheaper than dirt but still. I've also been rebuilding turrets and building/scrapping/building/scrapping beachheads.

Maybe long refleet times are caused by multiple expensive bonus ships and possibly somewhat careless use of the ships? "Yarrr I have a big fleet so I'll just blob around". Lose 20% of your fleet every time you do that and it starts to add up. I know I always have problems with resources if I use Space Tanks.. they're expensive and have a bad habit of dying since they have little HP and are Polycrystal. So avoid fights (use Transports to bypass AI planets) and don't rely too heavily on ships only I guess.

That's probably part of it, for sure.  I tend to be fairly cautious with the fleet overall, but not particularly cognizant of ship vs. ship matchups, so I might lose a large portion of some expensive unit, while losing little of everything else.

(When we got guardians, I recall this being particularly devastating.  "Oh, it's got a medium hull, fighters then!  OH GOD IT'S EATING MY FIGHTERS, WTF.  Oh, it does AOE attacks...it's supposed to be countered by frigates, despite having a bonus against artillery....")

Well now that X Guardians/Guard Posts counter Y Ships that's exactly what you have to do.

Oh guard posts I pay attention.  They tend not to move.

Sure it takes a bit micro but IMO it's good kind of micro. Not "zerg fest micro".
