Champion upgrades
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:39:33 pm »
Pretty simple question (I hope):

What upgrades do I absolutely need for my champion?

Shields.

Other than that, it really depends. I tend to stick to the basic modules.

Though by no means a must have, I have had great results with the heavy beam cannon module.

And as Faulty Logic said, sheild modules should be high priority for upgrading.

As Faulty said, Shields.
As a runner up, I would recommend Missiles - useful on 3 of 4 hull-types, and for those three hulls, missiles are the ONLY source of Ultra-Heavy multipliers.

Everything else is on a as-needed or as-desired schedule.

For winning nebulae, you want a set of modules with multipliers against Light, Medium and Heavy. This usually means the basic three modules, although substitutions are possible (e.g. Rail Cannon for Needler). If you want to crack starbases (or the Ravenous Shadow) personally, you'll also need something with a bonus against Ultra-Heavy (Missile, Plasma Siege Cannon, Bomber Drone - Photon Lance might work too although it doesn't have multipliers).

Other than that, though? Run wild. Some things to try include Paralyzers (though they don't do well in nebulae), Insanity Inducers, Heavy Beam Cannon. One of these days I think I'll give the Zenith Heat Beam a spin as well.

Given that (almost) everything you attack in a nebula is either a starship or a starbase, Polarizers and Impulse Reaction Emitters should be very effective.

I prefer long range stuff when it comes to the game as a whole, so I usually build my  Champion and Riot Starships with long range modules like lasers.

I really like spireships. And plasma guns.

One time I unlocked both plasma guns and spireships on the first nebula. I was super happy.

I often up the lasers because they have a bonus against Polycrystal which seems useful in the "real game". Though maybe a bonus against Medium would be pretty handy too because many Spire fleetships and guardians use that.

Well, I'm still not sure what to invest in myself since I haven't seen enough of the modules yet and in my latest game I've leveled the three drone bays quite a bit which seems like a mistake since the limited points along with many upgrade levels kinda mean you need to commit early. I'm not even sure I'll play another game with the champions since they are so brutally unbalanced that it approaches game breaking.
