AI War on Three Moves Ahead!
« on: October 28, 2009, 02:48:51 pm »
Thought I'd post this up, since I'm a long time follower of the FlashofSteel.com's weekly strategy podcast, known as Three Moves Ahead. This week's podcast (episode 36) announced that next week's show, usually uploaded around Tuesday evening/ Wednesday morning (depending upon timezone) is going to star Chris, presumably extolling the virtues of AI War and hopefully having a groovey time with the journalistic equivalent of the Harlem Globe Trotters - Troy, Tom, Julian and perhaps Bruce!

I'm an avid commenter on Troy's site, and I'm very excited to have the opportunity to listen to Chris and AI War star on my favourite podcast show!! Top stuff Chris, I hope it all goes well and you have a good time doing it!

Thanks for the post here -- I wasn't aware they had made mention of this just yet! :)  Yeah, we've been talking back and forth about me being on their show for a while, but now the timing has finally been right for all.  I'm definitely stoked about it, also!

Yeah, very cool episode! Good reference to The Forever War (Great book!) but I think a video game of that would be awful ;D

So true of a lot of books.  And often movies of great books are bad.  And games of great movies are often bad.  And movies of great games... often bad.  Hmm, I see a pattern! ;)

I really feel like each medium is very unique, and that at best one can capture some of the "feel" of another work to a degree, or incorporate ideas.  I'd never want to work on a "direct translation" of a move/book to a game, unless I had a lot of latitude to really stray from the source material, but as with most creators I think you can find little bits and pieces of other works that have influenced me (in all media) in my own stuff.

I liked the Accidental Time Machine pretty well, too -- did you read that one?  Same author.  Camouflage, I think it was called, was also good by him.

You could totally build a sim-type game around the forever war, where you have to manage people from different time eras(and vastly different beliefs) together to build teams, then send them off for decades(not saying it would have to be good, but theres potential there).

Yeah, that's true.  And I think that's a great example of how to do a Cross-Media Conversion Right -- basically, really stray from the source material, or the obvious parallels anyway, and pick some interesting facet to build a larger world around.

Yep, here's hoping we do well with that!  I hadn't thought to mention it, but that's a great point! :)
