AI War on Linux Testing
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:31:22 am »
I've heard good things about Unity on Linux, so I decided to give the latest beta a shot.

The system has a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and is running the latest WINE (1.3.3) straight out of the box.

Specs are:
CPU: Dual Core 2Ghz Intel Celeron
RAM: 2 GB (Some generic brand)
GPU: Onboard nForce 630i / Geforce 7100

Without touching anything at all, AI War installs absolutely perfectly and runs fairly well. The only issues I've seen so far is my mouse wheel not working and maybe some performance issues. I say maybe because my trusty old laptop (1.6 dual core, 1gb ram, 7300 go) struggles a little with the beta as well.

Here's some proof of my little endeavor in the form of some screenies. All in all, being able to both install and run AI War on Ubuntu and WINE straight out of the box is very exciting.

omg....time for me to make a WINE donation? I'll try it out, and it seems very reasonable for me to do so in this case. Does this mean...no more Windows? Please let it be so..

Sweet! I had high hopes for works-in-WINE after our experience with Tidalis, and it's really great to see it in action, thanks :)

I also have AI War working on Linux under Wine. Details are:

Kubuntu 10.10 32-bit clean install
Wine 1.3.5
AI War 3.716 + TZR + CoN
RAM: 2GB
Graphics: GTX 280
CPU: AMD 2.2Ghz dual-core (4400 I think)

Everything seems absolutely fine, indistinguishable from running under XP. No special setup needed. Updates installing without any issues.

I had tried this previously with Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit, which did work OK except no sound at all, which was quite possibly a Wine 64-bit/32-bit issue.

Good job guys! Thanks! ;D

Edit: typo.

A little lopsided, yes :) The GTX 280 is from another computer (Q6600 @ 3GHz, 4GB) and actually doesn't completely work. Within a minute or so of doing anything intense it all locks up for a few seconds, then swaps all the textures around. Trying to play TF2 with an engineer skin wrapped round the side of a building and the ground on fire was a bit distracting to say the least. Fine with AI War though, so far anyway.

No idea, but probably.  It runs on 32 or 64 bit windows and osx.  I imagine it runs anywhere that WINE will under linux.

Which version of Wine are you using?

If you run from a command line
Code: [Select]
wine .wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/AIWar/AIWar.exe are there any useful error messages?

Here's everything from my terminal window when I attempt to run it:

EDIT: NEVERMIND...I thought I was on 1.1.3 Wine but I was mistaken. Works now lol

EDIT2: just thought I'd say. I've been playing with it a bunch in Linux and it works INCREDIBLY well. I haven't got to play the betas at all with my current computer setup pretty much being Linux only but wow, the game looks gorgeous. The new music is amazing. Cannot wait to see what comes next!
