That's the "chat window always displays with a scrollbar to avoid text input box focus issues" that cropped up with the Linux support.

So I have to look at that thing every game all game just because of Linux? Why would anyone use Linux anyway?

I'm not tone deaf enough to query why one would use Linux, but I kinda also don't want to have a useless screen element because of something that doesn't affect me.

Tried out the Vanguard and Starship Fanatic AIs with random secondaries to see if it helped out with my multi-HW lag/poor performance.  It did.  I think.  I didn't survive into the mid-game.  Evidently, one of the random secondaries was one of the Turtle AIs (I presume not the Teleporter as I didn't see any teleporting fleetships), and there were eyes everywhere in the galaxy.  Eyes are even less fun to deal with when your opponent only has a handful of starships.

Even being "smart" and just using my champion as an assassin backfired as the modules on my champion were enough to trigger a raid eye (at least I presume so, as there was no other ship on the planet or nearby).  Having 250+MkIV starships dumped as threat three planets out was more than my defences could possibly handle at that relatively early stage.

Uhh, I mean, thanks for the fun!

Actually, it would.  That's the problem.  Because of the changes so that the game works on Linux it caused the text input boxes to lose focus when the chat window did not have a scrollbar.  ON ALL PLATFORMS.

Edit:
There's probably a better fix, but given that the reason the issue occurs is unclear, but that having the scrollbar does fix the problem, it was added as a quick-fix to make people happy.

It was more of a question than a bash. Would you  care to enlighten me? Surely anyrhing that can ne done on Linux can be done on Windows.. or?

There is a lot of people that would prefer Windows buggered off for some reason or another (like having to add $100+ to the cost of a new computer if its going to be for games, and other better reasons I'm not remembering at the moment), but its the better of the two (three if you count mac) for gaming because things work better on it due to a lot of things using directx or just being built for windows first.

Most non-game things have a suitably useful linux version, or at least work great in wine.

Not having to pay $80-$100 (per machine) for the OS is a plus.  Not having to deal with ridiculous shenanigans like 8's "you can only sell apps for the modern interface through our store which takes a 30% cut, and only if we want to sell it" (or whatever it was) is a BIG plus.  And in general not being beholden to a single company with a spotty customer-service track-record (that would apply to both Microsoft and Apple).

That said I still use Windows for everything, I'm not an idealist about it, but I look forward to the day when I have viable alternatives.

On the textbox thing: yes, the unity upgrade broke it for all platforms.  Even if we didn't do a linux build it would still have broken it.  Though the linux build is the main reason we did the unity upgrade.

One of the things I hope to pull off with the UI is to get away from the underlying stuff that leads to that kind of nonsense :)  Which our other games on later versions of our architecture have mostly managed to do, it just takes a lot of time to retrofit something like that, etc.

So basically in the giant and not-yet-aflame lumber mill of post-8.0, AI War is the one with all the old parts that get resharpened every so often since they still work well, just not as nicely as the newer bits other areas have and occasionally cause an huge cloud of dust to appear.

Except that the lumber mill is always on fire, yes.

It seems to be more of a controlled burn at this point, rather than a raging inferno.  Just wait until the suppression systems start getting messed with (have fun playing with the UI elements  ;) ).

The most common reason I have gotten is that it is a better platform for computer programming.  True be told though, the reasons are as varied as the problems MS Windows has (to each, their own).

My girlfriend took a Samsung laptop and put Linux on it.  All she does is web browse.  She's learned how to do everything she has needed to do in Linux and she doesn't have to deal with the mess that is Windows.

Opened your save. My computer wept. Switched to the ST planet and ship icons filled my screen, so I zoomed out. Game told me that it _was_ totally zoomed out. You could seriously walk from one end of the inner grav well to the other without getting your feet cold.

Really?  The #1 reason I don't run linux at least some of the time is that I don't think I could live without Microsoft Visual Studio (or the Express free variants) as my IDE ;)

Damn it Keith I'm a gamer, not a programmer!!

What little programming I have done was also on a Window machine (college stuff and I'm terribly slow at it).

If I had to venture a guess it might be better for commercial applications (business tools, whatever, I don't know?) where you are doing ground up work and you can't afford for one of those BSOD events wiping out all your work.

Of all my complaints about Windows, BSODs haven't been one of them for years.  I think I've had precisely 1 in the past 4 years that wasn't explained either by my RAM not getting enough voltage (4 sticks pulled a bit more than stock mobo settings allowed for) or an SSD going sketchy.  And that 1 was probably from overheating.

My main beef isn't with the OS per se (though I would much prefer something that was open-source), but with the company's view of "Customer Service" apparently being "The Customer Serves Us".  Same as the main reason I avoid Apple stuff.

Yeah, I haven't had a BSOD in a while either.  Had one...a week ago? but that's the only one I can think of since I graduated college....six years ago
