Only thing I can think of is to start turning off and turning down options.  Run the unit cap at ultra low too.  And in the game options, turn down those settings.

Keith might have some more ideas in the morning.

So I decided to do something silly. 8/8 Random Moderate/Easier Random Easier on both AIs. No plots or anything, CSGs disabled otherwise everything enabled.

10 planets spokes, pick a planet with 9 wormholes.

One AI homeworld had a CRE.

The other had 3 CREs.
Destroying humanity, one command station at a time.

Okay, tried it again with no fast drones, The Hunter controlling 2 champions, and bonus ship type power slaver.

-We're just under an hour in, every planet except the AI Homeworlds is capped. Every ARS but 1 (which is on a HW) is taken, every turret controller, etc.
-One of the AIs is a backdoor hacker. Irritating, 'cause he's sending waves to ALL my planets. Might as well be a warp jumper. I thought the waves were supposed to come out of the exo-galactic wormhole, but turns out it just serves as an invulnerable warp gate.
-One AI Homeworld has a CPA post near the wormhole, a grav reactor all the way on the other side of the grav well, and a Wrath Lance covered by a core forcefield in between me and the grav reactor.
-The other one has 2 implosion drone posts and an H/K factory.
-Spire Archives are spawning on the AI homeworlds. Intended when no core worlds exist?

Speaking of the H/K factory, it only started sending an H/K at the 30 minute mark, not right away.

Also we seem to be running into weird chat bug where chat box has to be manually clicked at before one can type, which happened every once in a while. ???

Update: 8.005 official update out to hotfix a performance issue that has been plaguing some players since the unity engine upgrade.  It was actually affecting everyone, but it was only really that noticeable on some machines.

Yeah, it annoys the *** out of me.

I think I'd be happier if the backdoor hacker got exo wormholes on the player home and every adjacent planet but waves could only come out of said wormholes.

Backdoor hacker sending a wave to [not homeworld] with no hostile wormholes means the wave comes from the edge of the gravity well in a random direction which is nigh impossible to build defenses for (except sniper/spider cheese, which is known cheese).

Update: 8.006 official update out to hotfix a performance issue that was still affecting some folks.  This returns the rendering pipeline to a state that we are more directly sorting for performance purposes rather than letting the unity engine asynchronously try to handle it on its own.  It seems to help, given the volume of stuff that gets drawn in this game.

So, I count us as being up to 8.011 so far. Lots of performance updates going in, huh?

Good work, although sadly the game still runs worse on my fairly new Windows 8 box than my four year old laptop. Never did get to the root cause of that :/
