I was able to update from 7.048 to 7.052 fine, no beta branch necessary.

I can confirm the chat text box focus bug, but it only seems to happen when the "recent messages" box on the side is up (the one above the side bar ship lost)

Regarding the updater not working for folks, my best guess is some form of permissions issue.  You need to make sure that you have full permissions to the folder that AI War is in, or that the updater launches in administrator mode, for that to work.  What OS are you on?  I can tell it's windows from the extension, but beyond that what OS are people having trouble with it working on?

I'm honestly surprised at the issue, because this is the same updater that Last Federation has used since it's been out, and the one that all the other games use now, too, and the first failure of this sort I've heard of.  So that's really odd.

Thanks!

Strange. By now you would think Steam would allow some way for the apps to say what permissions are allowed to do to their own data folders (with a only a subset of permissions allowed, to keep developers from being lazy just saying everyone can do anything to everything in my folder, which would be a real security issue), and then Steam would set the proper ACLs on the folders upon install (yes, Linux has full fledges ACLs beyond just Owner/Group/Other Read/Write/Execute these days, and I think OSX does too, but I will need to check on that)

(BTW, some more case sensitivity stuff: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=15618. I'm not the reporter I fixed those by hand in my installation)

Update: 7.053 out to hotfix a few new-expansion-specific issues with the game requesting images at the wrong path in a case-sensitive file system.  Penguins are very literal creatures, and want everything in black and white.

As a penguin, I greatly appreciate the support   ;D  I've been poking it today, and it's been a great pleasure; I've been looking forward to this day for years.

I run Windows 7, and I run Steam as Administrator.  I also tried running AIWar.exe directly as Administrator; neither worked.  The only unusual thing about my system is that I have the default OS language set to Japanese.  This has caused problems with some applications, but I've never had problems with AI War before.

I was also unable to duplicate the problem.  I deleted everything, re-downloaded 7.001 from Steam (main branch), upgraded to 7.048 ingame, then upgraded to 7.053 using the new updater, and everything worked perfectly.  I version I saw the issue with was 7.049, when attempting the 7.049 -> 7.051 update.
So I guess the problem went away?  It certainly doesn't seem to be happening any more (the 7.052->7.053 upgrade on the old install worked fine, too).

I tried updating from 7.049 to 7.052 on an administrator account. I do not know why there would be any permission problem.

Quote from: 7.046 Patch notes
Fixed an typo in the spirecraft jumpship description stating that the attrition happens on AI planets ">= Mark" rather than "> Mark".

This needs a little more... Using a Mark II Jumpship as an example, the "Self attrition only on AI worlds > Mark 2" in the ship stats is correct, but the descriptive text erroneously states "On planets of the same mark (or higher) than the jumpship, however, the jumpship expires..."  It's only true for higher marks.

Optionally, the two references to self-attrition in the Mark V Jumpship stats and description could dropped altogether. ("Self attrition only on AI worlds > Mark 5" sounds funny.)

Hey guys:

1. Thanks for the notes on the updater.  That is super odd, but I'm glad that it is working now, anyhow.  I think that some of the issues were related to the Steamworks integration being off if you were not in the beta branch on steam.  I've merged the beta and official branches on steam so that they are now both 7.052, which should solve a ton of confusion and issues people are having around linux and the updaters in general.

This version is probably overall more solid than the old official on Steam anyhow, despite this not yet being 8.0-ready, so I figure it's better to get a wider group of people to hit whatever issues there happen to be BEFORE we go through the big push of 8.0.  But a lot of the issues were from the split way this was beta released anyhow, so this should solve a number of them.

2. For the chat textbox thing, for the life of me I still cannot duplicate this.  Is anyone seeing this when the scrollbars are not visible?  If it's only when there are scrollbars there, then I can work around that by making the message box work a bit more like it does in Valley 2 and so forth in that it expands when you are in chat, and I can just make it never have a scrollbar there to work around this thing.  I would have to hide the thing that lets you select ships on the right sidebar, probably, but that doesn't seem to be a key bit of information to me while you are in chat, I don't know.

3. Is anyone having any other issues with textboxes?  Keith reported this to me, but I can't duplicate this either.  Does anyone else see this?
- if you send a chat line, and then quickly start typing another, the textbox will come up with a cursor in it but typing won't actually put anything in the textbox (though it does make the cursor stop blinking as it would normally)
- clicking the textbox causes it to highlight like a button and the cursor to disappear, but you can type (and use backspace) normally

That might also be due to the scrollbars quickly appearing and then disappearing when something new gets added, I'm not sure.

4. If you click into the message log window, when there is a scrollbar are you seeing this same issue?  I can kind of duplicate this if I just start mashing keys like crazy and hitting enter constantly.  It winds up eventually deselecting the textbox and I have to click back into it.  But there's no cursor or anything there when that happens.

5. What screen resolutions are people running that are running into the textbox issues?  I've tried this on my usual 1800x720 windowed mode version without problems, and then at 1024x720 windowed.

--------

Anything else I should know about for the latest versions regarding weirdness from the upgrade?

Thanks all!

I found the text box bug when I was testing stuff..
..so I copy pasted the metal head cheat into the chat box over and over again because I was spending a lot of resources and herp a derp.. needed a lot of resources..
So I first copied the cheat and pressed Enter-->Ctrl+v-->Enter-->Enter-->Ctrl+v-->Enter over and over again.. every time the scroll bar appeared the text box wasn't focused so I had to click the text box and then copy paste and press enter. When the scroll bar disappeared I could spam the cheat again until the scroll bar appeared again.
I'm using 1280x1024 resolution.

Okay, thanks.  A new beta patch is now out.  Any feedback would be most welcome. :)

http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Current_Post-7.000_Beta#Prerelease_7.054

* Mostly as a test, the game is now _always_ showing the scrollbar in the messagebox window.
** There is a lack of clarity as to whether the scrollbar itself is causing the issues with the textbox focusing, or whether having more text lines in the message window than can be shown at once (thus requiring scrolling) is the issue.  In other words, does the textbox focus issue still happen when there is a scrollbar but there's nothing it has to scroll?  Or is the mere presence of the scrollbar itself enough to be a problem?
** Since Chris is working on this and can't duplicate the issue at all, any feedback on this is much appreciated!

Ok what the hell..
"Download and install all updates" and "Run updater tool" buttons do exactly the same. Both start the updater and the "Download and install all updates" does NOT install the new patch.

Hmm, it's trying to download 7053, which is no longer even active.  That's odd.  It should be trying to download 7054 if you do the "Download and install all updates."  Not sure what to make of that.
