Assuming the nebula scenarios are kept as they are, losing a champ in one of them should work differently from losing a champ outside. (Perhaps simply making them respawn within the nebula would be sufficient?)

Hmm, interesting.

It is true that one of things I dread about champs is just getting them to the nebula in the first place, and the headaches that result if they die within it.

On the other hand, having them teleport start there would also cause problems.

I would imagine if during a nebula event on death the champ would go through regular respawn timers first, then teleport to the nebula wormhole, and from there suffer a minute or so of paralysis.
This would make it still have to wait a timer before it could jump back into the action, yet would reduce frustration because a lot less exp would be missed since the champ would still collect xp while paralyzed.
However, sounds tricky to code, and sounds ripe for bugs.

Another parting thought before work:

Have champion nebulas have speeds, similarly to combat speed in main game.

Current settings would be "slow" or "normal"

Add a "fast" option, which causes all units within nebula to do double damage, move twice as fast, and maybe not have half range. Numbers would need to balance, but the spirit of it is that nebulas move much faster.

I used to use golems the same way I now use the champ, as a solo hero. Not because it's effective but because it's fun. Though the last time I got my hands on an arty golem it was still useless (i.e. unbuffed) so it only saw use as a scarecrow against AI threat. I don't play with exos but I don't mind insanely expensive to use superweapons.
