Remember that small empires is a bad thing as far as the basic game design of AI War is concerned. From a design standpoint you want to push the player to take more planets, and thus draw more AIP upon themselves.

So, with that in mind, I see no problem in penalizing those with small empires.
I was thinking the same thing. The Shield Networks were implemented for this very reason.

Hi Keith, just another food for thought:

Give the exo speed cheats only for special forces captains. Would make them unique and help make them worthy of the "hard" difficulty they currently give.

I actually really liked that post, because it shows like, a really cool and elegant design decision. The AI is supposed to be hard because it's a hard decision to take more planets, which can make the AI easier, but will always make the AI harder. Stuff like that always makes me smile a little bit.

What in the name of... OS Raid Engine? That sounds like some kind of testing/development artifact.
Unless doom AIs are now allowed to have invisible raid engines that activate whenever they feel like.

Pretty sure that comes from the Zenith Trader.  In one game, I found 2 of them while scouting, and another one on accident.  Needless to say, I haven't enabled the Zenith Traders in my games lately.
My other bonus ship is a TARDIS.

What do they look like? Are they the same as a regular raid engine?

I want to buy a raid engine to use against the AI :(

This update has inspired me to actually start playing AI War again!

What do I need to do to get Ancient Shadows up and kicking?

Though the population seems a bit high: if you had advanced-logging on your RuntimeData directory should have a SpecialForcesLogicLog.txt file that will give details on the special forces spawns (not the stuff from normal reinforcement pulses, but that's probably only 10% of the mass).  If you post that I can check to see if there's some kind of math errr.

I know right! Now Special Forces Captain is actually a worthy opponent. When I started destroying those ships more Special Forces kept flooding in non stop. Kinda like an intergalactic Sentry Eye.

I agree with making homeworlds and maybe core world always use the old logic (pick whatever) for reinforcements. Maybe for core worlds though, they could use this logic, but with an altered probability distribution. (40% for whatever, 60% focus logic or something like this)

None of the new stuff in this update actually requires AS, iirc, but assuming you've already got the base game and the expansions you already own installed, go here:

http://www.arcengames.com/w/index.php/aiwar-downloads

And scroll down a bit and click on the appropriate download link for Ancient Shadows.  Once it's done, run the installer and tell it where to find your AIW install, etc.

Then run the game and enter your license key; if you don't have one you can get one here: http://sites.fastspring.com/arcengames/product/aiwarancientshadows

Yes it is a doom indeed and I like it. So far I like the new Special Forces Captain AI.
